I want to put a Vintage Air GenIV unit in my 55. I did not want to use the sure-fit unit as I don't want to run the lines out the fire wall. Does anyone know if the universal Gen IV will fit under the dash? If so,will it work with Raingear wiper system and the stock 55 defrost ducts? Thanks

You do not have to run the lines out the firewall with the Sure Fit kit. I assume you're talking about running the out the place they designed for. But where else are you going to run them? I have mine running out of a diamond shaped bulkhead that's further to the passenger side and down lower, but it's still out the firewall. I've even seen them run to the driver side with a Sure Fit.
There are universal Gen IV units that will fit under the dash. You can make them clear the wipers. The Sure Fit units clear them too. The univeral units are smaller overall but don't have contours to fit the firewall recess, etc.
VA has dummy mockup units that you put a deposit on, use for your mockup, and return for credit. You may want to look into that.

Thanks for the info. I believe the sure-fit units run the line out through the engine compartment. You are right the lines will be coming out the firewall, but I want to run the lines through the top of the fender well then bring them in by the rad support. I plan on using a bulk head connector at the far side of the passenger firewall. If I am wrong about this sure-fit evaporator let me know. Thanks again

I just bought a Vintage Air Sure Fit cable unit for my '55, and the heater and A/C lines are on top of the evaporator, so you could probably run them anywhere you wish.

If you have replaced your firewall with anything more than about a 2.5" setback you will not be able to use the SureFit unit, as far as I can tell. It's made to fit the stock firewall contour on the passenger side and in one location that setback is about 2.5".

Chevy Nut.Your right about that. Its very tight to get the dash unit in with a stock firewall. If the firewall is stock, with some fabrication of the lines you can probably run the tubes out anywhere you want on the pasenger side.

Thanks everyone. Does anyone have a picture of a sure-fit unit other than the one on the vintage air web site? I would like to see how the lines come out for the heater hoses.

This does not show the unit itself but is a photo of the lines that run to the bulkhead that I placed as far to the passenger side of the firewall as practical. The connections to the VA unit are just out of sight on the left side of the photo.
