You can use just about any stock support. A common one is a GM support for a TH400. I think they can be had for around $50. Or you can even make your own like a lot of guys have done.

An old issue of "Chevy Classics" magazine I have states a first generation Camaro cross member is the way to go. In fact most of the tri-five suppliers sell the GM camaro unit for the 55-57's. I got mine from C&P out of PA. Around a hundred bucks with the frame brackets. You could also go to any of the Camaro aftermarket supply co's.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1-800 235-2475 www.cpchevy.com This is a large dealer/distributor of tri-5 parts like ecklers (but better prices), not a restoration shop. their parts catalog is 115 pages! Call and ask for a free copy or go on line. I buy 99.9% of my tri-5 parts from these guys. Great service and tech support, ask for George. I got my cross member from then in 1 day! Your in Jersey should be just as fast!

Rich, I built my own out of some square tubing. I used inch and a half by 1/8 thick tubing. Worked out really well. I could probably try to snap a couple pics of it if you wanted them. :tu

A crossmember isn't hard to build, if you have a welder. But using a pre-made one is even easier. I have used the early Camaro ones on a couple of chassis. They are often available on eBay. Here's a couple:

Chevynut, those are great prices!!! wish I had checked e-bay under Camaro ! All he will need to complete the installation is two stout angle iron brackets to bolt or weld to the frame to attach the crossmember to. C&P sells the brackets seperately as do many other parts houses.

I run that cross member. I used it for my 4 speed when I had a SBC. Then when I went to the BBC and the motor when 2 1/2' forward. I installed a 700R4 on it. It had to be moved. Just slid it on the brackets, not a problem. I don't remember how much it was. That was in the early 90's. Its a good bracket and has cutouts for the exhaust.

I am using a Gen II Camaro (1979) crossmember I got free and included a used cherry transmission mount. I only had to trim about 1/3 inch off one side and it works great. I made my crossmember mounts out of angle iron. Local used salvage crossmembers are plentiful and cheap; why buy a new one and pay shipping? Mark
