I have a 210 post car with buckets seats and a console. The seats are out of an early eightys... maybe Berreta. They're ok, but they're highbacks. What are some of you guys using for seats? I heard seats from a Cady or Silverado work well and have integral seatbelts.

Thanks,
Steve

Integral seatbelt seats are going to be highback, and will have a headrest. It's not hard to install a 3-point seatbelt into a post car.

Here's a pic of the 2000 Cadillac Eldorado 12-way power seats I just installed in my Nomad. The headrests will be removed and the seats completely reupholstered.

The picture doesn't need pulling up, it shows on the screen for me. Do you see the picture Henry posted?
Here is a Chrysler Sebring seat, it was way too tall for me. I'm going to use Chrysler La Barron seats without the headrests and pillow top cushions. :p

Chevynut,

I've not yet decided on the seats to use in my 57, but really like the looks of your Caddy seats. How difficult was it to mount them in your car?

Ray, as you can see in the pic I built the outer mounts to raise the seat track up. With a 1.25" square tube, the track sits just a little (1/8-1/4") above the inner seat area. I welded brackets to the tube and bolted them to the original bolt holes. I have not finished the inner brackets, but at this time I'm planning to bolt the track through the floor with a large plate on the back side. There may be a 3/16" or so thick plate on top of the floor as well, to level the seats out. If I knew what I know now, I would have put a plate inside the brace at the back of the seat to bolt it to. ;)

BTW, the tracks on these seats are aluminum so I'm putting a reinforcement plate inside the track to keep them from tearing out, although they are pretty thick. I'm 5'8" and where the seat is in the pic is at about 1/2 of the fore-aft travel. The track hangs over into the rear floor area a little, so I trimmed it off.

I checked out the Trail Blazer seats, they are nice and may work OK but they have an air bag is the side of them that I don't like the looks of.

Thank you Chevynut for the information. Of all the seats that I've looked at thus far, the Cad seats are my favorite for the tri-fives. They have a nice look, don't appear to be too difficult to install, and I'm thinking they're comfortable too.

Thanks again.

Laszlo, i have a question to ask for doing the plate reinforcement. would you want to have the corners of the plate bent down to keep them from pulling through the floor? like i have seen done on seat belt mounts? or would this really matter on a seat mount.

I don't know if it necessarily needs to be bent down, but the edges do need to be rounded to avoid cutting through the floor sheetmetal. The inboard seatbelt latch is connected to the seat frame, so it's very important to have a strong seat mount.

"The inboard seatbelt latch is connected to the seat frame, so it's very important to have a strong seat mount."

To make the rear of my inner seat mount stronger, I extended it slightly (probably 2"); this allowed the rear mounting bolt to go through the full width body brace under the floor. I reinforced the brace locally with a piece of 1/4" plate and welded a nut to it.

I make a habit of bending the edges of the plates not only for extra strength but also it looks neater, good day, Henry.

Really depends on the style of car your building and theme!
Im personally not a big fan of a buckets seat in a tri-five just me but if it was a race car or a complete custom maybe they can be done so weel with the bench in it and look amazing

ChevyNut...the Cad seats are one of four I have been considering. Several are on ebay but none indicate they include all the electrical components to make them work. For example, I understand they have a memory capability to reset the seat. Some have lumbar support and heat.

When you purchased yours how did you confirm the set had all the electrical components needed for these options? I really do not need all the options that these seats offer. If I were not going to use all the options on the seat, heat/lumbar/memory, would these seats be a bad choice? I like how these seats look but I do not necessarily need all the extra options.

Thanks,

Don

Don, let me assure you that I would prefer NOT to have memory in my driver's seat, because it complicates things a little. Each motor drive mechanism has a position sensor on it that is not needed without memory. You can tell if it has memory by the "black box" under the seat that has all the memory and seat driver electronics in it. If the box works, there's no problem. The box is actually pretty simple...one IC (memory chip) and a bunch of relays. Memory is not needed to get full functionality, and it takes a different set of switches so you have to use the box. The Caddy passenger seat has all the same functions as the driver's seat, without the memory feature. On a memory seat the switches basically ground signals that go to the seat control box. On a non-memory seat the switches direct current to the motors.

You can tell something about the seats by counting the motors. I have 4 visible motors....forward/aft, rear up/down, front up/down, back recline. You can't see the lumbar motors in these seats, but there are two of them in the seat back, one for the lumbar in/out, one for the lumbar up/down. That makes them 12-way seats. :D I think mine have heat as well, but I don't plan to use that feature. I have heated seats in my Boxster S and never use them.

I guess you kinda have to know what was offered with the car. You can also look at the switches and see how many different functions they have. Mine has 3 switches....one for up/down/forward, one for recline, and one for lumbar. My passenger seat has all the same functions, which is sometimes hard to find in some cars. I guess Cadillac wants the passenger as comfortable as the driver. ;)

One thing on the Caddy seats...there weren't many 2-door Cadillac models made. So be aware that the 4-door model seat backs won't tilt forward like the 2-door ones do. I think that's why the Eldo seats are in fairly high demand.

Thanks for taking the time to explain about the Cad seats. Complications are things I would like to avoid. I was suspicious that all the options would push me in that direction. They look good though.

The plan all along has been a bench seat but evey time I see a setup like yours I tend to drift a little. I need to stop doing that! Positive side is I learn a little more.

Thanks again!

Don

I used Silverado extra cab power and heated seats so I could have seat belts in my hardtop. They are not perfect but do work. I am now looking for a deal on Mercedes SL seats with the belts .Price is the problem with the Mercedes but they are nice.
