On trifive doors there are caged nuts for the hinges to bolt to inside the door. On both of my doors some of the nuts are stripped. Is there a way to repair them without pulling the door skins off?

If you look real close where the hinge bolts are on the door you will see some spot welds, some of these hold a cage that holds the threaded thick pieces of steel, I don't remember if you can get to the top ones though, here is a pic of the inside,

This question had come up before so I took a close up while I had the door skin off.

If you can pick out the spot weld in the center (top) and drill out the outside portion in the door frame, you should be able to push the cage in enough to get the nut plate out for repair. Then drop back in place once fixed, relocate the cage tight to the inner door frame and re-weld.
On the 57 I'm working on,half of the bolt wouldn't stay tight,we retaped the threads and installed new bolts and now they all tighten right up.You could even install longer bolt with nylock nuts on the backside just to make sure they stay tight.

Thanks guys. I'm going to try to locate the spot welds and drill them out, then remove the plates and replace the nuts. I'll let you know how I make out. Worse comes to worse, i'll do the longer bolt and nut routine.

I drilled the spot weld out on one of mine, replaced the nuts, dropped it back in and plug welded the hole. It wasn't very hard to do. ;)

Thanks Laz, i'm going to try and get to it this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. Gotta try to fit it in between putting my buddy's nomad back on the frame and pulling the rear out of a 56.
Work work work.:D:D
