my fuel gage has not been working for sometime.
it's an auto meter gage made to work with the orig sending unit which is in the orig tank.

the gage reads E all the time. It started giving false readings for a time and then went to E and stays there now

I took the wire off the sending unit and grounded it to the frame.
no change.

I took the gage out of the dash and removed a wire I think is the sending unit wire ( its not marked) the gage went to F

I installed a new sending unit i had and it is back to E

What do you all think it is? the wire? How can I check the sending unit I removed ?
since I grounded the wire does that remove the possibility that the tank ground is bad?

Please help sure would like a gage again

The wire from the gauge to the tank would have to be grounding out somewhere. Follow it back and see if it is pinched somewhere. Have you done anything to the car from the time it was working? You might look back and see if any other changes may have somehow affected the fuel gauge wire.

Oh, and you might also try running a ground wire to the tank. Clamp a wire to the tank (sending unit is best location) and to the frame.

thanks mike I did ground the wire to the frame and no change still on E
i put an ohm meter on the wire back by the fuel tank but not connected and when i put the second wire from the meter to the frame of the car the ohm meter went to infinity.
I thought it was suppost to do that but maybe it is shorted to the car somewhere.
I'll try running a new wire from the unit to the gage and see what happens
thanks again
for the help

That will work. Just run a long wire out the door and under the car to the sender. If it works you will know it's the wire.
