I took off a half-day Thursday and all of Friday to work on the 55 and I actually got some more done.
The pockets were finish welded and the springs fitted.

And I got the rear cut-outs cut and welded.

With the reversed rear eyes, I was concerned about clearance at the front of the cut-out. After measuring a few times I determined the cut out could move forward and still be fine. So, I moved it forward about an inch and a quarter and welded them in.

Still some grinding to do and I've got the upper mounts ready to weld in. I'll do that tomorrow.

I had a lot of trouble holding the MIG gun steady while lying down, or sitting, scrunched over trying to reach the weld areas.
I found that I could use a long rod (or a long screwdriver) wedged anywhere I could to steady my hand. It worked a lot better.

I also had some trouble with the MIG welder itself. I noticed, sometimes it would "zip" right along just like it's supposed to and sometimes it would pop and blob, like the wire was not running out smoothly.
After checking everything else, I noticed the ground clamp seemed to be getting unusually hot.
I took the cable off and found the face that bolts to the clamp to be pretty tarnished.
I cleaned it up good and reattached. I haven't tried it out yet, but I think I wasn't getting a good ground.

Welding upside down is always a hard job and painful. Looks like your almost done.

Nice job Jeff!!! It all takes time. I did that set on my 56 chassis with the body off. It is definitely not an easy task with the body on. Keep up the good work.

Now, to get the rear axle fixed up and the brake line ran, the E-brake cables, the cargo floor...and whatever else I was going to do...

BTW cleaning the ground cable fixed the hot clamp issue. :tu

Welders just weren't made to weld upside down. Looks like you've got it pretty solid though, that's what matters. I'm doing the same thing starting tonight.

Hey Jeff. Where did you get your spring pocket kit? We got ours from classic chevy, but every piece of instruction and the instructions from ecklers as well show a long shackle just like the one in your pics. I 'm hoping I don't have a clearance issue. Not a big deal because I wouldn't mind making longer ones if it's an issue or if I have a ride height issue. I just wonder why I got the short shackles.

Jay.

Man, those look great. :tu:tu
Having a bare frame to work on is the way to go.
Could I ask a favor?
Would you take a couple close up shots of your E-brake cable brackets and post them?
Mine have been removed and I'd like to make some more.
Thanks.

Better yet, here they are now! Hope this helps. 3598

3599 This is the drivers side bracket, the pass. side looks exactly the same. I did notice when I double checked that they are both angled to the back, so here is another. 3600
