I'm in the process of installing new floor pans in my '56. I primed and painted the underside and intend to undercoat the entire floor pan (my buddy keeps telling me to use roll on bed liner instead of undercoating). Should i undercoat the top side or will just priming and painting be sufficient? I'll be using Fatt Matt on the entire firewall, floor and the panel between the back seat and the trunk.

The most rusted out cars i ever seen were undercoated. My brother had a new 74 car he took it and had something called Z BARR done to it in chicago even had a written guarantee that it would never rust. The tar coating somehow held the moisture and it rusted everywhere:eek: .It was junk in 4 years. Just clean and paint it. Most dont drive there tri five in bad weather anyway. Randall

Just paint it. I'm always leery when I see undercoating on a restoration. It's like some ones trying to hide something.

Larry if you started a poll here on TriFive whether to
1: undercoat
2: not undercoat
My vote would be 'not undercoat'

Don't do it!!!! No undercoating as others already stated you'll be fixing rust in a few years. Plus if you plan to take it to car show the judges don't like it, have two buddies that undercoated theirs & the judges always take off points on their cars.
Mine is not undercoated but is painted black underneath where paint is supposed to be it really sets off the stainless & chrome underneath.

I was scraping off some of the factory old undercoating off my delivery tonight and it's amazing to see shiny black paint (unrusted) underneath.

Hmmmm....i guess that answers that question. But on the plus side it means less work for me so that's just sooner she'll be back on the road.
