View Full Version : Anybody installed HID headlights?

I just installed a set on my 55. There's alot of connectors.....hi-lo unit, and ballast w/ignitor on each side. The connectors are straight-forward....they can only be hooked up one way. After everything is hooked-up, I turn on the lights and only one bulb worked. I stopped work on it for a few days partly to give myself time enough to try and figure it out.
I went back out there today and switched the ballasts around and then turned on the lights. Now only the other one works. Could they have sent a bad ballast? any ideas before I call Danchuk tomorrow and try to get some help?

I called Danchuk and no one there could help me, so they told me to call Delta. I talked to someone there and they told me that I diagnosed it correctly and gave me instructions to send back the ballast and they would check it.
They said it would take 3-5 days to check it and then they would repair it or send a new one. Said I had to pay the freight to get it back to them without even a re-embursement if it was bad.
Now after waiting 6 weeks after ordering from Danchuk and finally receiving them, I have to wait approx. another week to 2 before I can get them up and going. Makes it hard to drive at night.
Anybody thinking of going the HID route, don't expect it to be a quick fix. I'll let you know how it turned out once (if) I ever get them hooked up......

Sorry, I'd have to tell them where to stick it. If it's bad, they should pay for return shipping. I won't do business with Danjunk unless I have to.

I linked to these in another thread.
Somethign like this perhaps?

they're not cheap, but they are 7" round and look like the depth will fit.
Sylvania as you may know is one of the leading brands of automotive lighting in the market so I would be inclined to think that his is a high quality product.
If you're not sure how it works, HIDs have a ballast and ignitor that leads to the bulb itself, so you will have to find a location to mount these extra units.
It sounds like you got a bad ballast and/or ignitor depending on whether or not you can swap these pieces. The problem I've had with HIDs is that they can be a pain to troubleshoot. Halogen is pertty easy.. got 12v at the connector? should have light.. ya dont.. the problem is elsewhere.
I had hids in my DD for a while but when one died on me for an unknown reason I took them out and went to halogen. I did not have time to fool with it.

sounds like you have flourescent head lights. Are the ballast & igniter seperate or are they one unit. I have heard of flourescent lights both ways. should not be any different then fixing a house flourescent light. I agree if a bad ballast then they should pay shipping. just complain more and loudly!

I have never seen a ballast and igniter as 1 piece.
They do work a bit like fluorescent in that they have a low operating wattage with a transformer of sorts.
HIDs work by arching a natural arch of energy through a gas, usually Xenon iirc. It produces a variety of colors that are usually closer to sunlight in their kelvin rating. Once you've used HIDs you never want to go back to halogen, but there are a lot of operating limitations like 3x the faliure points and a lot more cost involved than halogen.
I took them out of my daily driver because one of the igniters or ballasts died at the last minute and I didnt have the time or desire to troubleshoot it at the time. I had just changed jobs and was broke too so that didn't help lol.

The ballast was sent back on 11/13. I have yet to receive the new one. Everytime i called I would get the usual....the technition is out for the day....I'll call you back.....it was shipped on that date.......undeliverable.....returned to sender....
Now it's Jan. 3rd and still no ballast. I don't usually have any problems with Danchuk (that's who I ordered them from), and I honestly think the problem lies with Delta lights. Great looking lights and everything, but customer service has been suspect. When (if) I finally get them installed, I'll post some pics.
Overall, after spending $1,200 and having to wait 4 months (or more) for results, I would suggest going an alternate route. JMO

Yea, Randy, If I had to do it all over again, I would have put the money somewhere else. Especially being how long it's taken.

I finally received the new ballast today and got that put in after work today. Still have to do some adjusting and then I'll get some pics and post 'em. By the way, THEY WORK, and they look pretty nice, and bright too.
So, from Sept. 13 till Jan. 12, finally all installed. Heck, I rewired my whole car in less time than that.
Come to think of it.......Haford built his whole car in 30 days.

Well now that is good news! The lights in the sky we saw here in southern Utah last night must have been yours :D

I know this is an old thread, but I never posted a pic of the new HID lights, and someone on another thread had asked about them so I decided to put them on here.
This is the entire set prior to installation.

This is a head-on shot, but they really light up well when driving.

Hey Chuck...it's been quite a while since you installed those HID lights. They still working ok. I see they have come down in price and I was thinking about a set.
