i am putting together a 55 chevy. the body is off the chassis. i installed the new rear shock crossmember i bought through williams chassis craft. i am now concerned that the stock shock mounts (in the body) will interfere with the body going back on. does anyone know if they will clear the crossmember or if i will have to go back and cut out the stock original shock areas in the body???

I had problems with the shocks hitting the cross over, had to do some cutting to make it work right .

While I had the wagon body off I just cut out the shock area and welded in flat pieces, good day, Henry.

I made my own bar and put it as high as I could and the original shock mounts clear it. If I had to do it over, I would flatten the floor where the original shock mounts are and put the shock bar ABOVE the frame, to give more exhaust pipe clearance.

I also cut and welded flat plates in. Helps with clearance to get the shocks bolted in place.

I added the shock bar to mine and left the stock shock mounts in place and didn`t have any problems.

I had plenty of room, too, but since the previous owner had air shocks on it, the stock shock mounts/floor were cracked pretty bad, so I too cut them out and welded plates in place. Didn't have to, it just looks better;)

thanks guys. i think i am going to risk not cutting them until i put the body back on. i am having the bottom of the car painted right now so i can reinstall back on chassis. i was thinking i would try and avoid having to go back to cut and weld up existing. i mounted my new shock crossmember towards the bottom of the humps in the rails. so i may just get lucky!

I know I'll be cutting mine out. No use in having something there that isn't being used.

Ditto. It's just one more place for moisture to collect. I'm getting rid of mine.
