I'm about to put my door back together on my 1957 2 door 210 sedan and started wondering if there is a "standard" position for the handles or is it personal preference. What position were they from the factory? Anyone have a picture?:D

Thanks,

Rick my preference is that i usually have them aimed toward the front with the window up, so it matches the door handle.

Mine are pointed every which way right now, I know they were off before I got the car and I had them off at least once since.

When I put mine back on after installing the new door panels I looked in the Eckler's catalog to see how they were on their pictures and sort of followed that.

Seems with the windows up they had the window cranks forward.

Thanks,

I put the door handles on my 56 straight up at 12:00 o'clock.

Why? My leg kept hitting the handle in any other position, and the door would pop open. :D

I have always put window cranks straight down at 6 Oclock position. The reason I was taught that the weight of the window and the weight of a crank in a hoizontal position may cause the window glass to slightly work itself down on rough roads or due to looseness from warn parts.

As far as I can tell, the factory setting with the windows closed was 4:00 for the vent window and 7:00 for the main window on the driver side. Just the opposite on the passenger side.

Seems that I had the same problem,so I put them at 45' like I had seen in a catalog. Can't remember which one!

Just as a safety point, I'd position the handle away from the passengers. Impaling on objects in the car was common back in the day, prior to break away door handles.

Pics from 1955 models, I guess 57 is the same position.

From an original Chevrolet ad in 1955.

Thanks everyone for all the replies:D:tu

This has been interesting to see how people position the handles and their reasons. I can't help but wonder if the factory had a specific reason such as safety or convenience when they installed them in the cars, or was it just up to the guy doing it.

Thanks again,:D
