This is pretty nifty.
Just enter your zip code in the site below, and it tells you which gas stations have the cheapest prices (and the highest) on gas in your zip code area.

It's updated every evening.

It even gives you a map to the stations.

1.66 gallon in portland, texas today.

$2.29 in Bradford County, PA. Because of the dictatorship of Williams Oil Company and the Dandy Mini Marts, gas prices will NEVER get that cheap up here! Keep hearing the 'Supply and Demand' bullcrap.

It is just someone lining their pockets!

Large oil companies like Exxon, etc. had $5 to $7 BILLION PROFITS in 1 quarter. NOT 1 year, but 1 quarter (3 months time). That is what I call PRICE GOUGING (the s0n5-@-b!tch3s).

(stepping off the soap box now.... )

The oil companies have gone from 4.5 cents profit per gallon to 8.5 cents. They are going to investigated for price gouging. The Federal Government gets 18 cents tax the state get 25 to 30 cents tax. The the gas station see crude prices raise so they raise prices to pay for the replacement cost so they aren't caught with fuel to expensive to sell when competition lowers the price again. Banks earn an average of 16.8% and processed food 24%. Utilities are are always the lowest profit margin services nearly all are under the interest rates at the bank. When the interest rate raises the have to raise prices so inflation doesn't take up the profits. Prices never Go Down Because the government continually adjusts interest ,the way to control inflation, to reduce the the Value of the national debt. We are up to 2.78 for regular.

1957chevy
04-26-2006, 03:50 PM
So, are you saying that the oil companies are actually good guys and we should stop complaining about their billion dollar profits? Just curious, it was hard to tell from your post if you're supporting the outrageous profits or just explaining that other businesses and governments get even more so what the oil companies get in comparison is small?! If that's your point, this is if you're trying to make a point (you might not be), then you should compare apples to apples -- tell us what you mean by the banks earn and average of 16.8% and processed food 24%. Are you saying that the banks get a profit of 16.8% as compared to the oil company's profits of 8.5 cents per gallon? I'm confused, obviously 8)

In New Zealand we are paying $1.71 per litre for 91 octane. Times that by 3.78 to get 1 US gallon makes it $6.46 NZ for a gallon. With the current exchange rate of 63 cents, that makes it about $4.07 US for a gallon of our cheapest fuel or $4.19 for premium. I might move to the US of A to live!!!!!!

supply and demand plus oil trades on the commodities market (futures) with hundreds of traders bidding up and down the price. Also the many pension funds investing in oil futures over the past year that caused the price to spike. Another factor is China and India's increased thirst for oil. Not to mention OPEC, which by the way, just announced a reduction in oil production. So the cheap gas we are presently experiencing may be short lived although it could hold fairly steady until spring or early summer.

Bottom line.....neither Democrats nor Republicans can control the price of oil although it's been tried by past administrations by using price controls which never work. OPEC is the closest thing to any "government" controlling oil prices. That said, I just read that Saudi Arabia may kick up their daily production, ignoring OPEC's decision to cut production. So maybe gas prices will stay down for awhile. Time will tell.:)

debus@earthlink.net
10-20-2006, 10:02 AM
 Saudi Arabia IS going to cut production but not by as much as first announced. Gas prices should remain steady as there is a five year high of world wide oil (in storage) right now.

We don't get any from Iran but they are the cause..they 'captured' some Brit sailors/marines and are holding them hostage. It is believed that IF something were to happen in Iran becasue of this the surrounding sand dunes will rise up and cut off their oil supplies in support of Iran.

I was hearing on the radio a while ago that oil is more likely to go back to $45/bbl than to go to $100/bbl. It was at $83 at the time. More productions is opening up, Canadian oil sands are producing, alternative energy is being pursued (solar, bio-diesel, ethanol, etc.), nuclear power plants being planned in USA and China....all will drive the price of oil down over time. Gas prices in Europe are steep to say the least! I hate the fact that gas has crept up to $3.30 a gallon with no signs of it ever going back down. Honda announced the release of a hydrogen fueled car to be available in southern california next summer and plans to make a fueling station available that will convert natural gas to hydrogen fuel right in your own garage. We all know that these 'new' technologies are never made available until it's cost-effective for the auto companies, so I guess gas prices have zoomed up high enough that they think they can get us to drive alternate fuel cars even if they cost a lot to lease/buy, etc. Sad state of affairs! Mean while the Saudis, etc. are buying up our country.....

The reason gas is so expensive in Europe has nothing to do with the cost of the gasoline, it's the taxes they choose to impose on themselves ;). They have decided over the years to pay for their social programs, roads, and most everything else with a gas tax (not that everyone there agrees with it ;)). We pay for those things in other ways like sales tax, property taxes, and income taxes. I wouldn't be surprised if the total taxes we pay are close to the same as theirs....not that I agree with it. :D :D

My Boxster S gets about the same mileage hotrodding around town, but 29 on the highway. I don't drive it in the winter, though, and only put about 3-4000 miles a year on it...mostly local. :D

A lof of the cost of fuel in other countries is due to their own taxation, not the cost of the fuel. They have chosen to fund their government that way, instead of through other types of taxes. In the end, they get it from all of us one way or another.

Sounds like it hasn't changed in a year in the Netherlands...here's a post from last June:

Well here in the Netherlands its $2 per liter thats almost $8 the gallon but i dont run petrol but LPG (propane) this is $2.61 per gallon but the good thing is we get 95 or 98 petrol.Gr Townsman0

That shows that a large part of the increase we're seeing in the US is due to the drop in the US$, not in the inherent prices going up. Oil prices are going up in dollars for the same reason....weak dollar. If the dollar gets back to where it was a few years ago, oil will drop significantly.

Tina, you're kidding yourself if you believe that. E85 gasoline only has about 90,660 BTU/gallon since it's 85% ethanol. At $2.49 per gallon you are paying $.027465 per 1000 BTU.

Regular gasoloine has 125,000 BTU per gallon. So you are paying the equivalent of $3.433 per gallon of regular gas.

If regular gas in your area is $3.12 it would only cost you $.02496 per 1000 BTU.

The higher the BTUs the more miles per gallon. So until regular gas gets to $3.43 it will be cheaper to use than E85. Don't let the low price of E85 fool you.

About a year ago, I could sometimes find prices as low as 8.70/L, now I'll be lucky to find anything under 10.60/L (more likely, it'll be at or over 11/L). So that's at least a 22% (more like 27%) increase, which is directly reflected in my monthly gas usage. Basic food is going up, too, but that's off topic for this thread.

So that's at least a 22% (more like 27%) increase, which is directly reflected in my monthly gas usage. Basic food is going up, too, but that's off topic for this thread.

Looking back in this thread it looks like our gas was roughly $2.50 a year ago, and now it''s roughly $3.60. That's a 44% increase in a year. In fact, someone said it was $2.50 at their location as late as last October.

I still say we should form OFEC, the Organization of Food Exporting Countries to show OPEC that they aren't the only ones with a valuable commodity. Once they're hungry, maybe they'll bring prices down.:rolleyes:

"Exxon Mobil (XOM:exxon mobil corp com)

XOM 88.55, -4.52, -4.9%) said profit rose to $10.89 billion, or $2.03 a share, from $6.8 billion, or $1.62 a share, earned in the year-ago period."

That's $44 BILLION in profit in a year.

12 cents a gallon in Venezuela!

Price comparisons are not all created equal. Comparing gas prices across nations is always difficult. For starters, the AIRINC numbers don't take into account different salaries in different countries, or the different exchange rates. The dollar has lost considerable ground to the euro recently. Because oil is priced in dollars, rising oil prices aren't as hard on people paying with currencies which are stronger than the dollar, as they can essentially buy more oil with their money as the dollar falls in value.

And then there's the varying distances people drive, the public transportation options available, and the different services people get in exchange for high gas prices. For example, Europe's stronger social safety net, including cheaper health care and higher education, is paid for partly through gas taxes.

Just like to say we pay 1.729 per litre for diesel which is $6.53 per US gallon and 1.529 for unleaded which is $5.78 per US gallon.
It costs me $600.00 to fill my truck for work now, when this time last year it was about $420.00 which is all out of my pocket.
The company that I subcontract to was generous enough(ha ha still laughing) to give me a 1.5% rise in my fuel levy which is about $25-$30 dollars a week extra to do their work. The other $150.00 I have to pay for not to mention 10 hrs less work a week over the last year as well.
Lucky I own my truck in one more payment and then I will be selling it and getting a real job with paid holidays and sick pay. Can`t wait to ring my boss one morning and tell him that I can`t work there anymore as I have sold my truck. Chris.

Actually there are pockets in the US where gas is cheap, comparatively so. In Norther Florida and Souther Georgia the prices are typically 50 cents or more lower than around here (South Florida). Prices here are now at or above four bucks a gallon, and I heard on the news the other night that gas in London is as much as ten dollars a gallon.

It depends on how you look at it;). "Gas price" in England includes a heck of a lot of taxes. So the gas isn't what's expensive, it's the taxes that keep going up as the price of gas goes up. I know that's somewhat semantics, but there are protests over in England right now over the "green taxes" on their gas. These people are taxing themselves to death...

While Europe has led the way in using tax incentives to encourage people to buy low-emission cars and to build carbon-neutral houses in order to meet Kyoto targets, it has become increasingly apparent that inflation-battered voters are no longer willing to go along.

No problem...I said it was somewhat semantics;). But I can't sympathize much with the Europeans and their outrageous gas prices. They did it unto themselves by electing to pay for their social programs and "green" policies with gas taxes. It's not even logical to try to compare their gas prices to ours because of that....that was my main point. We pay our taxes through other means.

i'm from san diego and i saw the gas price at the arco station equivalent to the 76 and chevron gas prices. as far as i recall even up to say 10 years ago the chevron and 76 were normally 15-20 cents higher than the cheap arco gas. and now they are battling to have a higher price. i thought that was a little out of control. when the cheap gas station is having a higher price than the normally expensive company, yeah, please tell me again how this bolshevism is going on.

To put things in perspective I had to think back to the year 1973 when I graduated high school. Still living at home my main budget concern was .....

Gas for my 68 Camaro -----39 cents a gallon
My minimum wage job paid $1.60 hr. approximately 1/4 of my hourly salary went to buy a gallon of gas...........

Do the math.........Minimum wage would need to be $16.00 per hour today !!!!

And to think the present time might be " The good old days " in the future for our kids and grandkids.

I don't think you can compare minimum wages over the years...they have been kept low by the ********** even as average wages have increased. Look at average wages and you'll get a more believable comparison. The average annual pay in 1973 was $7580 and in 2006 it was $38651. In 1981 it was $13773.

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/COLA/AWI.html

Also, if you compare to the gas prices of the early 80's to those today, you'll get a little different perspective. Gas is still not all that much more expensive compared to those times.

In 1981 gas was $2.77 in 2004 dollars. In 2004 gas was $1.79. The 1981 price in 2008 dollars is probably something like $3.12 per gallon (assuming 3% inflation).

http://www.urban.org/UploadedPDF/900836_gasoline_prices.pdf

So while we're paying more now, it's still not that far out of line, considering that this is probably a "bubble" that will burst before long. Speculation is driving a lot of this, not only supply and demand. Look at what happened to stock prices when the dotcom speculation bubble burst.

Another thing to consider is that gasoline, for most people, is a fairly small part of their monthly budget. And while it's getting to be a bigger part, inflation on the whole doesn't seem to be that bad based on recent reports.

I was driving in the mountains to my son's wedding last weekend.....not many people seem to be concerned about the price of gas. There were hundreds of people in town and in the canyon just driving around.

I see just as many large vehicles now as I did before, I call the street where I park next to the school where I work "battleship row" from all the Tahoes and Expeditions. I believe people in south O.C. are somewhat insulated from gas price changes, but I have heard people complaining about the rising cost.

I saw an article recently online that the average percentage of income dedicated to fuel is now at 4%. Below the 4.5% it was in 1981, but high from a historical perspective. What is unfortunate is the effect on lower income households, where the fuel bills from people surveyed in the rural south ran an average of 13%.

Our family at one point just two years ago had our Nomad, a Durango Hemi (13 mpg in a good week) and a Tundra Double Cab (same). Now I drive an '06 Accord (23-24 mpg) and my wife replaced her Durango with a Honda Odyssey (high teens). When my lease is up on my Accord and the Nomad is (hopefully) finished, I'll replace the Accord with a Mini Cooper (high 20s/low 30s) and drive the Nomad when I need to carry something big.

Now, as people fly by me in their big SUVs, I think to myself, "I'd rather put my money into my car, rather than into my car's tank". Then I catch up to them at the next light and smile. Then they take off, and I catch up to them at the next light and smile. For miles and miles.:)

Gas in New Zealand has just gone to NZ$2.07/liter for 91octane RON and NZ$2.12/liter for 95octane RON. A US$ buys NZ$1.30 at the moment so in your terms it would be US$10.77 & US$11.02 respectively per US gallon.
In terms of percentage of fuel cost to family income, it's around 5%.
My attitude is to hold fast and hope things get better, I see guys offloading their V8 cars for Toyotas and they take such a big hit, it makes me laugh at how much gas you could buy with the big hit.

Gas here is no longer available for under $4.00 and is going up at the rate of one or two cents per day! The increase in the price is what's hurting us, not that actual price. What I mean is that when any expense doubles in such a short time, it hits the pocketbook real hard unless it's something that can be done away with, not like gas which is a necessity. It would be nice if we could just up and move closer to work until the higher price finds a more comfortable place in our personal budgets, but that's just not possible, especially with the depressed real estate market that we have right now.

I'm also going to hold fast and wait for things to get better. I've already downsized to two cars, both 4 cylinder ones that get 30 mpg (plus the 57, of course!) and will continue to drive fuel efficient cars like I started to do in 1975 when I went from gas guzzling V8s to higher mpg cars.

We must rethink our transportation concepts just like we did in the mid-70s, nothing more, nothing less. We'll get through this, we always do, it's just going to hurt for a while.

$4.09 in my area, you might do a little better if you shop around some but not much savings to be had out there. The 9 cents came by the way of a voted in tax increase for road improvements that took place long before people ever imagined these prices would hit like they are now. I just got back from a 1500+ mile trip to New Mexico and paid anywhere from $4.65 to $4.95 per gallon for diesel. I got about 22+ mpg.

One thing for sure....the high prices aren't keeping many people off the roads. We saw hundreds of huge RVs that probably get 5 mpg if you're lucky. There were people driving everywhere. People complain, but that's about all.

Marty, you're a pessimist. ;) I believe gas prices will drop significantly over the next couple of years, and even further over the next 5-10 years. This is a phony market, driven a lot by speculation in the oil markets. Even the Saudi shieks don't believe there is a supply problem. All we need is a event that scares the speculators off. Alalysts have stated that the supply-demand driven price of oil is about $70 per barrel, or half the current market price.

Never say never. The price of oil and gasoline plunged after the 70's and 80's "oil crisis", when people were predicting high oil was here to stay  IMO, it's no different now...just the next generation of fools.

Marty, notice how quickly oil prices can drop too? They went down $11 in just 2 -3 days due to the possibility of more supply. Speculators are driving this market.
