Hello.... I am going to remove and rebuild the manual steering box on my 56 Chevy. I don't remember if there is enough room to remove from car without removing radiator and core support panel. Can anyone help me out on this?.
The box and shaft are fairly long. I am going to have the header and alternator out of the way.
Thanks a lot.....KINGS X 56

Yes you should be able to get it out. You may have to move the seat back as far as possible so you can swing the steering shaft downward while coming upward with the steering box itself.

Hello, Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. Thanks for the answer. Now does anyone know a good place to buy a rebuilt manual steering box? I'm not sure about repairing/rebuilding the one in my car, that can be a big deal to get it right. I do not want to change to power steering...Some things should not change. Any possible sources would be appreciated. Thanks a lot....KINGS X 56

Also Eckler's has a rebuilt for 400.00 plus a 50.00 core fee. I also wanted the stock box, but my wife wanted the PS. Guess what? Just got the 500 box. I'm happy either way. Lloyd

I was going to send an article on rebuilding the stock box but you don't have an e-mail address listed.

I'm planning on rebuilding mine. I was just browsing over the manual over the weekend looking at the teardown and schematics. Looks like my Willys jeep I rebuilt a couple years ago in many ways. Straight forward. $400 bucks for a rebuilt. No way.

I bit the bullit and paid east coast to rebuild mine. I figured they have probably rebuilt hundreds and would be more apt to spot an abnormality than me just buying a kit and doing it myself. It looked brand new when I got it back. If it looks as good inside as outside, I will be happy. Sure feels good. Have not got it on the road yet. Time will tell. I am optimistic.
