Sometimes I just have to "say" that I'm going to finish something, just so I feel obligated to do it!
I have all my parts to finish my brake job, have to get some anti-freeze to fill up the radiator so can finish the water pump project, and I have to get the front tires pumped up and back on so I can put the beast back on the ground to check out the transmission linkage that I fixed (I hope!).
I've had all of these projects going on simultaneously for several weeks now so it's about time to finish them up so I can move on to other stuff!

Mike i totally understand. I need to be working on the 57, need to get the glass in the doors before i take it back to the body shop so they can get the doors readjusted while it`s there. I`ve been busy all day today painting on the house, very long day, started at 8:30 and quit at 6:30.

Well, picture this. You are sitting in a new condo that has nothing to be repaired and no car in the garage to work on. I have a ton of tools with nothing to work on and am chomping at the bit to get one to work on. I know some would love to have nothing to work on, but not me. I need something to get my hands dirty on.

I wish I could. I am in the last year of graduate school. Next summer, I am going to go pick up that '60 Bonneville and I will have my hands full, for at least a couple of months :D I would prefer to have a Tri-five at this point, but beggars can't be choosers. ;) After I get it finished though I will drag my wife on a roadtrip and I may swing by and show her the beauty of those cars, as her idea of beauty is a Nissan 350Z.

I finished my front brakes, got the drums back on (had a little trouble, but I think it's finally right), put some air in the old tires (should be okay to back out of the garage but will need new rubber soon), put the tires on and dropped the beast back to the floor for the first time in weeks. Put some fluid in the radiator and started 'er up! Started up right away and sure had some loud noises -- sounds like the fan is hitting something but I couldn't find anything. Do new water pumps make noise at first? Seemed to quiet down a little after a couple minutes.
Now I need to get some brake fluid and bleed the brakes. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow.

It always feels good to finish something, but all it really does is free up some time for the next project! I already have an idea what that might be....

Mike i`ve never had a new water pump make noise. Could it have possibly been the lifters leaked down and had to pump them back up from sitting. In other words was it a clattering noise?

Clattering might describe it....now I'm having starting problems, so until I get that fixed, I won't be able to do much listening!

Today I noticed that the new water pump leaks! There's a threaded plug on the top that's used for some other applications and I didn't have it in tight enough. I'm not sure it's tight enough now, but it's certainly tighter than it was....maybe I need to use some plumber's tape?

Definitly need a sealer on the plug threads. Teflon tape or your favorite sealer will work.

Thanks Terry, that's the advice I was looking for! I've got some teflon tape in the garage, I'll just use that.

How did you make out with sealing that plug? You had a clattering sound and now itis hard to start? Where was the noise from? Front of the engine?

I haven't had a chance to go out to the garage today, so I haven't sealed the plug yet.
The clattering sound was from the front, sounded more like the fan was hitting something.
The starting problem seems to be the battery. If I hook my charger/starter up to the battery it shows that the battery is in need of a charge, badly in need of a charge! I need to take a closer look at this situation, maybe all I need is a new battery, maybe something more.

Come to Illinois! I have a 57 that needs TLC!

How old is the battery? If it is more than 4 years you are due. Usually 4 years is about the average time they start to die. Are all the bolts and brackets tight?

I don't know the age of the battery, except that it's at least a little more than a year old (that's how long I've had the car!)....I'll check the bolts and brackets, etc.

I was thinking that maybe a bolt was sticking out and something spinning was touching it. Such as generator fan or fan blades.

Come to Illinois! I have a 57 that needs TLC!
I drive through Illinois several times a year on my way to and from the land of the gods (Wisconsin, of course!) --- you just never know....!

Mike it wouldn`t be hard to remove the fan belt and then turn it over by hand to check for it rubbing on something. Just a thought.

I'm going to start 'er up again and see if it still makes the noise, but I have to find the time to get out there. Maybe later today.

I had a tough time trying to get out to the garage lately...had too many other things to do last weekend, and was way to busy this week, so now I have to shoot for tomorrow and sunday....only problem is tomorrow is College Football day and usually involves family visits and cookouts (those are really good things) and that leaves Sunday. I'll see what I can do.

Mike it`s pretty bad when college football is more important than the 57. Sounds like time for a twelve step program. haha. I know about the too busy to work on the 57 thing though. My part time job is here at home doing upholstery work and i am totally covered up at the moment, and trying to get my house painted also really is putting a strain on me and my time.

I still need to fix my roof from damage done by the hurricane ---- last year! Too many projects, not nearly enough time!

And another weekend passes by and little or no work done on the 57 - my wife asked me yesterday what I was going to do for the day, work on the 57? I just didn't feel like it for some reason so the two of us just spent the day relaxing together....it was very nice! Still have the rear brakes to do before getting it on the road. So close, yet so far!

you might have needed that quality time together with your wife, good for you, the only time it seems like me and wife get quality time together is when we go to the mountains, which is why we try to go 4-5 times a year
