Back in 1990 when I first bought my 56 Bel Air there were still several FULL service gas stations here.... When it was time to gas up sometimes I would pull up to the FULL service pump... I would try to get out of the car and beat it into the station to order my fillup.... If it was a younger guy I would then disappear and watch as the poor soul would walk around my car trying to find the fill location.... I usually had to tell them "it goes in the left tailight" but by that time I usually got a "Ya, sure mister" or " You gotta be kidding me" I quit this prank after I installed a station wagon bumper and one overzealous pump jockey tried to pry my license plate off.... Guess it served me right.... FULL service is no longer available here and when I had the car repainted I wanted to be the only one to squirt gas on my new paint... I now have the one piece bubble lense similar to the old "Lee's Lenses" of days gone by..... I still get a kick out of the know it all guy that is going to show his friends where the gas goes in a 56 untill he gets to my car.... I still get the last laugh.... Ha Ha Haaaa!!!! Later, Dave

belairdave....Ever hear of a solar powered 56 Chevy, not really but this is what my wife told neighbor's grandaughter. Here's the link here at Trifive or type in the search area Solar Powered 56.

One kid at a station came over & asked me if I was confused or had been drinking when he saw me open the tail-light & poke the gas nozzle into it. I started laughing & explained I was fine & that I was putting the gas in at the right place. So before I was done I had a crowd of young teens checking out my ride & asking all kinds of questions.

That's one of the neat features of a 56 for sure. I decided to do the same on my 55 but this time it's electric:eek:

When I have my '56 at car shows there are almost always old timers (like me) who show there kids or grandkids where the gas goes or ask me to show them how it opens. The kids usually say that's really cool.

Too bad the '55s didn't have that already.

While i was checking out the '56 i eventually bought, the middle aged owner asked "You know where the gas filler is on this don't you?" i just smiled through my gray beard and said "Yup". She told my nephews (both of 'em are young pups) "I'll give the first one a twenty dollar bill that can find where the gas filler is at". She got to keep her twenty bucks.

65' ? full size Buick had the filler behind a large emblem, between the tail lights. It wasn't easy to find either.

When I was a young lad in the late 70's we went to Long Beach to pick up the 56 from my Great Aunt. One day as my dad was working on the car getting it ready for the trip home I was walking around the car but could not find the gas filler tube. I asked dad but he said to ask my Great Aunt. She said to keep looking but did give me a clue and said "look for a key slot". Well big help that was, still could not find it and they all stood around laughing. Finaly they had pitty on me and showed me. What a great memory. :)

Dave, do you have a visual on the guts of your Lee Type Lenses? I have a pair of those lenses but would like to see what someone else has done for the bulb setup.

I laughed so hard... I did that same bet once. I kept my $20 too.

I was a pump jockey back in '85 at an all full-serve station in Birmingham, MI. Occasionally we had a guy that looked like Gallagher (the comedian of sledge-o-matic fame) bring his '56 210 in for gas. He tried that trick on me, but I knew where the gas went. Only problem is he had those Lee lenses in it. After giggling about it, he'd hand me a Phillips screwdriver to take the lens out. I looked at him funny, then he got out and removed the lens. After a couple visits, he would just get out and remove the lens without me having to ask. He was probably hoping a new attendant would serve him so he could play the game!

When my now-wife and I started dating, I would sometimes go to the full-serve pumps in my '57 with her riding shotgun, and say, "Watch this, heehee!" Got 'em everytime!

Sorry Rox no visual on the lenses.... A friend of mine fastened a piece of tin on the back side of the tailight assembley.... He mounted 2 bulb sockets.... That large of a piece of red plastic really needs 2 bulbs as just 1 makes it look like something is missing.... We kept the origional hinged door and keep it closed with a phillips screw mounted on the top of the lense.... I have a keeper on the back side of the screw so that it doesen't get lost at fuel time.... I keep a phillips screw driver in the glove box at all times to unlock my secret fuel door.... Later, Dave
