Hello, I'm new to this site, only 1 week, and need help to decide on upgrading my stock brakes on my 57. I am not very mechanicly inclined, so should I convert both front and rear? Should I use power disc or just regular disc brakes? My car is basicly a weekend driver, I average about 500 miles per year, my car is all stock and I don't want to change the wheel size. I notice alot of kits you must upgrade the wheels. I've searched DF Brakes, CPP (which I'm now more confused!) and many other vendors. Any replies are greatly appreciated, Thank you in advance. Bob

Bob most just convert the front to disc brakes. I have read that there is a kit out there now that will allow you to keep the stock 14" wheels, but i haven`t seen it myself. Otherwise going to 15" wheels is just about inevitable.

Sorry, I can't recall the thread, but someone here knows of a disk brake conversion, that allows you to use the stock wheels. Do a search. It's been in the last couple of months.

"kit should work with most 14 inch wheels"

Yes, but that usually doesn't include stock 57 Chevy wheels.

To clear disc brakes, you need a rim that is made for a disc brake. That's why the Rally wheel was introduced by Chevy in 1967 when discs came out.

The rim on a Rally wheel is made differently on the inside so that it will clear a disc brake caliper. Chevy made some plain 14" wheels that will fit disc brakes in the mid 70s. If you have full wheel covers on your 57, you'll have to weld on the "nubs" that retain the wheel covers onto those later rims. Or, an easier way - Danchuk sells a 14" wheel that clears the calipers. Be sure to run steel valve stems on those wheels, as the wheel covers sometimes rotate and shear a rubber stem off.
