Hey. All of you have this great power that I need to engage and direct toward my Mother. Last week, she fell here at home and fractured her hip. The hospital (emergency room) she normally uses, x-rayed her and declared there was no fracture or issue - sent her home. Now, I must insert here that she is 91. By the end of this past week, she had endured far too much pain (had a home care nurse here 24 hrs a day) and we came to El Paso, against her will/desire. We took her to the doctor and he looked at her x-rays and immediately recognized the fracture and hooked us up with a local sports medical expert. More x-rays confirmed what her doctor indicated.

Short and sweet, she goes in tomorrow for hip surgery/ball replacement. I need your strength/prayers.

Last night, she actually walked 4 feet forward and back to her bed (assisted by the PT’s). She has a long way to go yet, but two days ago I wasn’t certain of her future.

I can't express how much it means to me to have such a great group of folks take a moment of time to pray for a complete stranger - May God Bless You All.

As an update: Yesterday morning, Mom was sitting in a chair, eating her breakfast and reading the El PAso Times Sunday Paper. She walked (assisted by her new walker) to the chair. { I am gonna have to get some paint, this walker is ugly, needs flames}. She is on the mend! She goes to Rehab today. I will keep you all posted.

As you may recall, my mother fell and broke her right hip at the end of January, went through the surgery, had some difficulty with the after effects of the surgery but has managed to do a complete recovery - up until today.

The house keeper was late getting in today and when she arrived, found mom on the floor and in pretty bad shape. She had fallen again and was in a great deal of pain. She is resting now at the hospital, but unfortunatly, now she has broken her left hip.

Folks she had a real rough time with recovery and at one point, we almost lost her. In short, I need the prayer community.

In advance, may our Lord give you all the Blessings of his Love and I extend my thanks for the past and future prayers.

Keep mine in yours. She fell last week and had to have screws put in her hip. If she would not try to tell the medical providers what to do, she would get along easier.

Nick,

We are all praying for your mom. We specifically pray that she will not have any ill side affects from surgery and she will be back up and on her feet soon. Please pass on to her that there are a lot of believers here praying for her. I pray for complete healing in Jesus name.

I will also get this off the net and to some of my praying family and friends!

correct. We are not strangers. As an update, I am back in El Paso today. Last night, Mom fell again. She is in the hospital with a broken Left Hip this time. I am at my wits end with regards to her health. I can't impress upon her how important it is to wear her Life Net alarm button. She laid in the floor for 4 hours last night until her house keeper came over. Very frustrating. Now I know how she and dad felt raising me, very frustrating.

Nick,
Sorry to hear to hear about your mom. My grandmother broke both of her hips to and her second one when she was 77. She was able to recover and continued to be active again. Jesus did say, "Love Your Neighbor", that doesn't mean the ones you live by either, our neighbors everywhere.

Nick, we will keep your Mom and yourself and all of your family in our thoughts and in our prayers. Praying for her full and speedy recovery.

One of the reasons I have not posted here much of late is that my Mother-in-Law fell as well. She is 82 and has fallen several times over the past several years and except for some dislocated toes and fingers, her injuries have been minor until now. She has a med-alert button we got her several years ago that she can wear around her neck or put in her pocket, but so far has refused to wear it.

We got a call from her on the phone at 2:30 AM 3 months ago. This time, she lost her balance and fell back against a long unused treadmill she had in her bedroom, dislocating her left shoulder and bruising some ribs. What she hadn't told us was that she had swelling and an infection in her legs for several weeks priour and so she had been staying off her feet to the degree that she lost strength in her legs. After spending a day and a half at the hospital emergency room (not her regular hospital nearby, for it was full and she was transported to another that could take her), they asked us out of the blue if we wanted to put her in a nursing home. We said 'No', of course and unbelievably, they discharged her without further treatment. She could not walk nor even make it to the bathroom on her own.

So we took her back to her home as she wished and stayed with her 24/7. She sat in a chair in her living room because she couldn't get in and out of bed. Her arm was trussed up in a tight sling and the ER nurse had given us a blanket and shown us how to place it behind her and use it to help pull her up without further injuring her shoulder so we could help her to the bathroom every few hours. Her condition plus the pain medication was such that I very nearly had to support all her weight and keep her from falling again every time she got up to go to the bathroom. After 4 days of this and no sleep for any of us, Jean reached the point where she could no longer get to the bathroom even with my assistance. Her legs gave out and the best that I could do was to let her down easy onto the floor and get her a pillow and a blanket to cover her. We called her doctor (this was past midnight) and he told us what to do in order to get her admitted to the hospital nearest her which he had rights to practice at. So we called 911 and had her transported there.

That was over 3 months ago. Thanks to her doctor, she is doing much better now. After her initial stay in the hospital, she was transferred to a nearby physical rehab hospital where she received some medical treatment and some physical therapy. Her doctor had to pull some strings to get her admitted to the rehab hospital. We are so grateful to him for doing that. For if he hadn't got her in there, she would likely be vegetating in a nursing home today. Anyway, to make a long story short, she was eventually moved to yet another rehab hospital, came down with pneumonia there, fought it off and was released (too early in our estimation because of arbitrary Medicare rules). But she fought her way back from the pneumonia at home and with the help of rehab nurses who have visited her several times a week, she can now get around with her walker and her cane and can use a bench in the tub to shower off.

I stop by every day or 2 to check in on her and to take out her trash and take care of any chores she needs done around the house. And I take her to her doctor appointments.

Her 2 dogs were kennelled during this time and she really did miss them. One is a laid back elderly Dutch barge dog named Charlie. And the other is a berserk yellow lab named Sarah (I call her 'h e l l hound'). Sarah is apparently an inbred hyperactive puppy mill dog. She is incorrigible and pretty much uncontrollable for Jean. It would take Cesar Milan to deal with that dog. I can make the dog mind to a great degree, if I pull my Marine Corps drill instructor routine on her, but life's too short to do that 24/7. Cheryl and I were dreading the day when Sarah might be brought home, as I have nightmares of this dog knocking Jean off her feet and injuring her. We tried to convince Jean to adopt her out. But she would have none of that. Jean's vet had the dog doped up on Ridllin before she fell and was hospitalized, believe it or not. Didn't make any noticeable difference, really. Anyway, at Jean's insistence, I brought both dogs home to her a week ago. So far, she has managed well with them and we are grateful for that. We have discontinued the Ridllin. We wouldn't dope a kid up with that stuff and Jean realizes that like a hyperactive kid, her dog Sarah needs consistent exercise (walks), discipline, boundaries and structure. So I go over and make sure that we do that. So far, so good.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that Jean is getting stronger every day and I hope your Mom is as well. She walks without her cane at times now, but always uses her walker when we take her out to eat or to the store to shop. She can use the shopping cart like a walker and with my bad knees, it was all I could do to keep up with her last time we went to the store. So I know she's getting better.

Jean has a 1994 Plymouth Voyager van and last week it crapped out whilst I was taking her to the grocery store. Fuel pump. Got it running again now and Jean is looking forward to driving again soon. I convinced her to take it a little at a time, just like learning to walk again. I worry about her falling as she gets in and out of the van and I worry about her having the strength in her legs to work the brakes. But I guess I'm sounding like an over-protective parent with a teenager just getting out on their own. I've got to step back and let Jean do all that she can on her own and just be there for her if she needs me. And G-d bless Dr. Bergeron for pulling strings and getting her into rehab...... Otherwise she'd be bed bound in a nursing home now and her quality of life wouldn't be anything like it is today. :)

Best regards,

Harry and Cheryl

Harry and Cheryl,

Our lives parallel, interesting. I will add Jean to my prayer list at church. The sad part about all of these things, they never told us in school it would end up like this. Mom has one of those Life Alert buttons. She would refuse to wear it. This last time, she spent 4 hours on the floor before the Home Healt Nurse found her - she wears it now - everywhere.

:):tu Thanks, Nick! Really appreciate that. Jean lost her husband to cancer in April of '07 and she successfully battled breast cancer herself in '08. Just routine followups and her medicine to take now. She's a fighter!

We haven't convinced Jean about carrying her med-alert button yet, but we're working on that. She's very independent and like her daughter and myself, she can be headstrong at times.

My Great-aunt Nettie drove until she was 86. She had a '65 Chevelle sport coupe with a 327 and it would really go. After she quit driving and gave the car to her son, she rode with her friend Mrs. O'Shea, who was 90 at the time. That was in the mid-'70s. I remember Mrs. O'Shea was nearly deaf. She drove a '54 Chevy with a stick shift. Couldn't hear the engine, so she'd wind it out in 1st gear and get about 15 ft. of 2nd gear scratch on asphalt when they left my Mom's house after a visit.

G-d bless,

Harry
