View Full Version : Anyone still playing with small scale?

I haven't done much in a few years, but I still like to dabble now and then.
This 57 Gasser I won a ribbon with at a show several years ago.

http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1135/4322794/21226053/355907658.jpg
This is a project I started years ago. My first car was a 55 4 door and I'd seen the shortys and they were just not in proportion.
Here's my start at an attempt to bring it down and make it more proprotional.
http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1135/4322794/21226053/355907663.jpg
I had aquired a 2 door and so at one time I had both cars and did some measuring.
It worked out to shorten the 4 door about 18 inches and use doors from a 2 door.
http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1135/4322794/21226053/355907649.jpg
To get the vertical proprotions, I decided about 4 inches needed to come out of the body.
And a chop was a must too.
http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1135/4322794/21226053/355907665.jpg
Someday, maybe I'll finish it...

I enjoy building models and found only one 55 model recently to work with. I did receive the 55 below as a Christmas present this year and was very surprised. Didn't realize anyone produced this car. It's a 1/18 scale, die-cast metal, Limited Edition collector model. Hood slides forward then tilts, doors open and front wheels turn with the steering wheel. All stock interior and 409 engine with 2x4's. Needless to say, it'll be in the family for a while:D

These are 1/25th scale plastic. Mostly what I mess with.
I have some 1/18 die cast as well.
Here's a vintage rail from the AMT Double Dragster kit from the 60s.
I got the kit from an older friend who dug it out of his mother's attic several years ago. Some skinny slicks and wire wheels from the parts boxes.
This was a fun build. No wiring or anything. Just paint and decals.
http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1135/4322794/21226053/354905426.jpg
A 37 Chevy Coupe, heavily modified. I chopped the top, raised the fenders to be even with the bottom of the body and cut off the running boards.
Molded in headlights ala 37 Ford. Hood side vents from the parts boxes.
http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1135/4322794/21226053/354714588.jpg
The solid Centerlines dates this one from the mid 80s.
A fully plumbed 409 and polished firewall. The windows are unexposed 35mm film (remember film?)
http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1135/4322794/21226053/354714586.jpg
This one is another fun build. A repop of an early Monogram kit.
http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1135/4322794/21226053/354905445.jpg
I've been collecting for years. Some I bought just for the wheels or because they were on sale for a couple bucks. Some were Christmas presents.
You can see the Double Dragster kit box next to the Lil Coffin(s) upper left.
http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1135/4322794/21226053/354713481.jpg
And a few more.
http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1135/4322794/21226053/354713493.jpg
I've got a bunch of old small parts from the early 60s on through the 70s.

Pretty cool looking 55'. I never saw one in 1/18 th.
I picked up a 56' Belair 2 dr sedan resin body, 1/24. That bashes that Deray kit into the Belair. I do OK painting. Just need to get the nerve up to paint the stainless. LoL. Any suggestions on how to go about it ? It's been years since I nervously took a bottle of Testors silver, and a fine brush, that ended up in a mess. I was thinking of using blue painters tape, to cut down on the mistakes.

I got an 18th scale 56 for Christmas. Chopped top street/drag style.
There was a product (I can't remember the name now), but it was a liquid masking product. (maybe that was the name Liquid Mask)
Paint it on and cut the area out that you want to paint, then peel the excess off.
I never got the steady-hand perfected enough to utilize it effectively though.
Besides tiny brushes you can use a toothpick.
Also ,you can cut a toothpick off and leave a clean flat end. Touch it to the paint lid to get just a little paint on and then rub it onto the raised trim.
It's almost a dry-brush technique.
Scotch tape would probably be better than blue painter's tape.
Just stick it onto a desktop a couple times to weaken the glue a little bit before applying to a painted model.
The thinner scotch tape will leave a better line in that small scale.
Just make sure you get the edges down good. Capillary action will suck paint right underneath if it's not down good.
A good magnifying desk light or headset is great for seeing the details.
Jeff, I've got an AMT Hurst Olds, still in the box. I'll have to send it to you for your collection.

I have a 2dr BelAir HT model that I'm painting to match my 2 dr Post--but I can't find a 'post' model??
jeffs55
02-24-2009, 08:56 AM
Have you looked on ebay? I can't think of one right off.
Usually the model companies made the most popular model into a model.
The Belair HT, the Nomad etc.
You may have to do some mods yourself.
Adding posts wouldn't be that hard if you have some left over flat parts somewhere around.
Measure the width of your post on your full size car and divide by 25.
Or whatever the scale you're working in.
Cut, whittle, sand and scribe a centerline for the door opening,
(It'll be easier to do before installing)
glue in place and use a little model putty or even bondo or spot putty to smooth the joints.
Yeah, I know, the roof line and windshields are not the same on a sedan and HT on the full size car, but if you don't tell, I won't.:D
Check out the "Change of plans" thread with Fuzzy and his daughter Storm building a 57 4 door.
They made a 4 door scale model from a HT kit and it looks really good.

Google "resin models cars." There are several co. that sell all kinds of cars. "Jimmy Flintstone" is one. I don't know what year your looking for, but I think my 56' was a discontinued, when I bought it.
And thanks Jeff. I definitely need some kind of magnifier, for that close work now days.

We play with the scaled models from time to time.
I had stopped building them when I was working 60 hours a week for one employer and then another 60 hours in my shop.
But since I haven't worked for anyone else in 6 years, the shop is slow, and the kids are wanting to build a few of them. I dug out my old kits and let them piece them back together after they all had a great fall off the shelf years ago.
Here's my model gravyard

I had a 1/18?? scale plastic model for years that I'd painted to match the '57 I had when I was sixteen--and finally 'trashed' it about 5 years before I got 'Christene'--and I can't seem to final another one--but it was a two door 'post'_dang, I still can't get used to calling them a '2 door sedan'!!!!!!

That 59 El Camino reminds me of the one I built from an AMT customizing kit back in 59 or 60.... Full length cruiser skirts, spotlights and a flat black paint job.... My Brother Larry and a Neighborhood friend Tim used to build these plastic kits from AMT, Revell, Monogram and Lindberg.... Mostley cars, a few trucks, Army vehicles and a few airplanes... A few days after watching the Ozzie & Harriet television show sponsored by Kodak, Dad came home with a new home movie camera.... Us kids deceided to make our own adventure film starring some of our model cars, trucks and Army stuff including toy soldiers.... We set everything up in a sandbox in the back yard.... After a while we deceided to sacrifice (see destroy) some of these models to make the plot more instresting.... We placed fire crackers under the sand and ran wires to the fire crackers so they would go off on cue... Lights-Camera-Action, Larry hit the switch and Ka-BOOOMMMM~~~~ we had plastic pieces and sand everywhere.... It was a real blast (pun intended} untill Dad returned home, took the camera back and grounded us.... 50 years later no model cars or fire works.... Later, Dave

I've got a couple of the 55s in HO and a Willys or two, some old Aurora cars and I found two 4-lane sets at a flea-market years ago.

Here are a few that I have done in the past. These are Hotwheels 1/64 scale. Sorry about the poor pic quality, I'm still trying to get these close-ups figured out!
The first truck was made from an extended cab pickup that I cut down to a regular cab.
The second is the same truck that I extended even more!
The 32 Ford I chopped off the roof and added the rubber tires from another model.
The VW has an added whale tail, blown small block, and rubber tires.
The last truck was easy, I only added the rubber white walls.

Here are a few more.
The first was a HW Dairy Delivery van that I cut the roof down on, extended the body for the duel rear wheels, and added the two blown engines.
The second was a HW Jeep Jeepster that I lengthened and made a tractor-puller out of.
The third was a HW Sooo Fast that I filled the roof on, cut out the suicide doors, scratch-built hinges for the doors, scratch-built the interior (the original model only had a single race seat), moved the engine from the rear to the front, and added rubber tires. I broke the windshield and haven't had time to fix it yet.

Here are a couple of model kits that I have done. I believe they are 1/24 scale.
The first one was built from two kits. The hemi and tires are from one kit ( I think it was a hemi Coronet), and the main body is from another. All the hoses, wires, carb linkage, return springs, etc. that you would find on a real car have been added to the kit.
The second is in stock kit form with custom paint.

Here are a couple more I dug out of the display case. They are plastic kits and I think date from the early 90's.
I added fuel lines and hoses to the Pro Stock Camaro as well as made the front end detatchable.
The Lambo is stock kit form.

Jeff,
Thanks for the kudo's! :D I use a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel attatched to a flexible hand held wand to cut the cars up and then JB Weld the bodies back together. I also use several different Dremel carving bits to shape the material as well. Super glue works well to glue the plastic bases back together. Probably the most difficult one that I have done so far was the Sooo Fast coupe with the opening doors. This car used to have the engine in the rear and a large hole in the roof for the scoop to stick out of. The doors didn't open on the car but I wanted them to so I had to cut them out. It took two cars to be able to do this. I cut the doors out of one body and then cut the body away from the doors on another. The hinges were quit challenging as you could imagine!

thought you guys might like a gander at this. I built these two from scratch WAY back in 1985. I was waiting on the doctors and lawyers to figure out to "cut me" or not (back surgery).
The Camaro won me a second place ribbon at the New Mexico State Fair against a fully detailed STATIC model.
Anyway they were FUN. The dragster was fast and straight.
The Camaro in it's last incarnation had hollow rubber rear tires, one would grow sooner than the other instantly making the car turn LEFT, (into a wall). Oh well. I'm gonna put it back together one day soon.

My alter ego when I'm building fast cars.
I custom fit him to the seat and behind the wheel. Took me quite a few hours to carve him out of a special block of bondo. Wanted to make teeth for hm to, but couldn't find any to use for them. And the bondo wasn't cooperating too make the tiny teeth.
This one just didn't seem finished till it had a wild driver.

I have to up load pictures.
I have been building models since I was a kid.
It is a nice stress reliever and a fun hobby.
I must have over 250 in my collection. I also collect
Hot Wheels, Johnny Lighting, Matchbox, Majesto, and others.
My scales range from 1/64 to 1/8. I need to build myself a really nice display room. I drive my wife crazy because I am always buying something car related.
I believe I have atleast 15 or 20 57 Chevies. My pride and joy is a 1/18 die-cast of a 57 150 door sedan. I have atleast 20 or 30 1/64 scale 57 Chevies.
I also have a couple 56 and a few 55 Chevies. And a lot of other makes and models. I am not very good at taking pictures, but I will and post them.
I can talk cars and models all day long.
My biggest model is my 57 150 2 door sedan, full scale. This year I will beging and a rebuilding it. I will keep you posted on the progress of this one.

. As I started to put the model together I notice a small wire and hoses that I assumed would have to be cut I left them alone to see were they would go later on in the procces of put the car together. putting the car together was easy except for the hoses, wires, and the out sides smaller accesesories. After the engine
was for the most part put toghter i seen that the wire need to be cut into several different lenghths so i did that but as I tried to put the wires on the distributer cap but they did not fit very wll in the small holes so i took the exacto knife to widen them soo i could glue in the wires. i got frustrated on the first to wires cause i could not get them to stay still long enoght for the glue to dire but i took the rest of the night off so i did. the next day i finish puteing the wires on and finally glued them under the manifolds.Yesterday i had to cut the hoses to put them on the firewall wich was alright but to day when i went to put the on the engine the kept on falling off the firewall. after i finally got those to coopperater with me i put the handleson, antnne, and mirror on which all of those woold not stop falling off so i use tape to hold them on. all i have lest on the model is making a small model engine cover and to possibly get it as close to the real one if possible. Here are some pics of my modified model to match my car.

A cheap and easy way to make your plug wires, and give you some color on them is to use old telephone wire.you can pretty much bend them the way you want them and fit them right into place. I use my Dremel and drill a small hole for the wire go into, and use jewlers plyers to bend the wire the direction I need it. Radiator hoses are pretty much the same way, just a larger gage wire.

And you could color code the spark plug wires with the telephone wire too.:D
I've used that and other wires of the right size to simulate hoses etc. as well.
They actually have products out that are simulated braded stuff now.
(been out several years actually)
The model looks great Storm. I like the way you painted the engine, exhausts, radiator etc. to match the full size version.:tu:tu:tu
Did you use the "chrome" foil on the side trim?

Hey Watchdog
I have to say one word
S W E E T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please tell me what scale is that beauty?
Everybodies here look amazing.
I really need to get pictures of mine up.
It's suppose to rain most of the week, so I hope
I can do it this week. I built a couple 1/12 scale 57's
The one is pretty nice, blue with flames on the front
fenders and hood, Craiger SS wheels and it looks awesome.
The other one I am lookiing fpr parts in this scale, I am building
it to look like the 57 in the movie Return to Macon County
with Nick Nolte and Don Johnson. I need some tires and wheels.
Right now I have wide whites on it. it looks good but I want to make it look the car in the movie. I have a 3rd one still in the box, I want to build tha one to be like the 57 in the movie Thunder and Lightening. Before it
gets banged up.
I can talk models all day long. It's a great hobby.
And a heck of a lot cheaper than buildin the real cars.
Awesome guys. I mean it.
Have a good one,
Rick

Its 1/25 scale. Thanks for the kind words! It looks better in person than in the picture and I have made some detail improvements since the photo. I used some fine wire to create the fuel line and the line going into the oil filter, Brake lines are next.
