After some 20 plus years of owning my 55 in mostly disassembled state, I finally completed my build and was hitting the local show and cruise circuit. I was getting a lot of kicks out of sitting in the line ups with everyone else and finally feeling like I belonged. Now like most guys, trophies were fun in the sense that they validated the hard work I put in on the car, but I really enjoy driving more than showing. What happened on one of my first cruises is still the best "trophy" I'll get while owning this car.
A good friend and I were parked side-by-side. He owns an unrestored turquoise 57 150 sedan. If you have a copy of last year's Hemmings Magazine, you've seen it on the cover (yeah, I'm happy for him). But there we sat jaw jacking in the sun when this very pretty young lady bounces up to us (a lot like Tigger) and excitedly wants to know if we know who owns "that car." She was pointing to my 55 and I said, "that's mine." Well the next thing I know she is offering me money to "rent" my car for her wedding. She's telling me about her dress from 1953 that still has rice in the bodice from the original wedding, the bridesmaid dresses from a 57 McCall's pattern and how the tuxes are patterned after the Jackie and JFK wedding. I finally get her to take a breath and ask her, "out of all these cars here, why mine?" For an answer she digs into her purse and simply holds up a swatch of fabric for her bridesmaid's dresses - it was an almost perfect paint match to my car.
How could I say no? (I didn't rent her my car, I donated my time as a gift.) The amusing end occurred when we pulled into the church and one of the bridesmaids said, "leave it to her to get someone to paint their car to match her wedding." My wife and I had the pleasure of driving the newlyweds to their reception and hear their first excited words as husband and wife. It just doesn't get any better than that.
