View Full Version : One of the Coolest "Trophies"

After some 20 plus years of owning my 55 in mostly disassembled state, I finally completed my build and was hitting the local show and cruise circuit. I was getting a lot of kicks out of sitting in the line ups with everyone else and finally feeling like I belonged. Now like most guys, trophies were fun in the sense that they validated the hard work I put in on the car, but I really enjoy driving more than showing. What happened on one of my first cruises is still the best "trophy" I'll get while owning this car.

A good friend and I were parked side-by-side. He owns an unrestored turquoise 57 150 sedan. If you have a copy of last year's Hemmings Magazine, you've seen it on the cover (yeah, I'm happy for him). But there we sat jaw jacking in the sun when this very pretty young lady bounces up to us (a lot like Tigger) and excitedly wants to know if we know who owns "that car." She was pointing to my 55 and I said, "that's mine." Well the next thing I know she is offering me money to "rent" my car for her wedding. She's telling me about her dress from 1953 that still has rice in the bodice from the original wedding, the bridesmaid dresses from a 57 McCall's pattern and how the tuxes are patterned after the Jackie and JFK wedding. I finally get her to take a breath and ask her, "out of all these cars here, why mine?" For an answer she digs into her purse and simply holds up a swatch of fabric for her bridesmaid's dresses - it was an almost perfect paint match to my car.

How could I say no? (I didn't rent her my car, I donated my time as a gift.) The amusing end occurred when we pulled into the church and one of the bridesmaids said, "leave it to her to get someone to paint their car to match her wedding." My wife and I had the pleasure of driving the newlyweds to their reception and hear their first excited words as husband and wife. It just doesn't get any better than that.

Many years ago I also "did" a wedding. My job was to haul the bride and groom from the church to their reception. It was an honor to do, I had fun and the bride and groom were ecstatic. Kinda hard to see in this B&W picture, but we are just leaving the area with all three of us in the front seat of my car. The bride's dress is so fluffy/big is stuck up as high as the dash. I've lowered my car a bit more since this photo was taken..

That is a cool story. I can just imagine her excitement. I could imagine what she would've looked like had you sad no.

Nice gift to the young couple from what was once a stranger who became a part of their lives.

Our insurance agent wanted us to do his daughter's wedding last year if it didn't rain. Wouldn't you know the morning of the wedding it stormed with heavy downpours & hail off & on all day so my car stayed garaged as our agent called & said don't risk damage to your car. Our family doctor's daughter is getting married this June & has asked us to drive the young couple to their reception if it's not storming so maybe this time weather will turn out nice & we can drive them. Keep your fingers crossed for them.

Believe it or not, I've done 4 weddings & a funeral with my '57 Wagon.

I didn't enjoy the funeral much as it was for a local Musician who was a big influence on me. I was however glad that he requested that I take him on his last cruise. R.I.P. Jack.
