View Full Version : NEW DISTRIBUTOR PROBLEMS

HEY, TRYING TO INSTALL A NEW PRO-COMP HEI DIST. REPLACED COIL AND RESISTOR TO BE ON SAFE SIDE AND ALSO NOT SURE HOW OLD THE CIOL WAS, THIS IS AN EXTERNAL COIL.I HAVE GREEN WIRE GOING TO + SIDE OF COIL WITH RED WIRE FROM DIST. BLK WIRE FROM DIST TO - side of ciol and have ciol grounded to firewall. try to start engine and resister started to smoke!do i need resistor? can i just connect dk grn wire and tan wire together and by pass resistor, or do i need different wiring harness for ingnition and hei? please help TONY

What do you mean by "coil grounded to firewall"? The coil needs no ground other than the mounting bracket.

Yes, you can connect the tan and dark green wire together and eleminate the resistor but that's not your problem. Something is shorting out.

hey don, thanks for the help. i will disconnect the xtra ground wire on the coil.. i will try hooking tan and green wires together, bypassing the resistor. distributor wire can both go on coil,right? red to + blk to -. hope this works.i do not have many upgrades on the car.geerator to alternator and now this. will let you know what happens.. thanks tony

hey don, i connected tan and green wires and took xtra ground wire off of coil. car finally started, a little rough but its running. i do have the right wires on the coil,i hope red on + and blk on -. let me know if thats cool. now i need to play with distributor to dial it in better, thanks again DON TONY
