I figured since it would be hard to get a radial tire to fit in the spare tire well that i plan to use one of the space saver wheel/tire combos in mine.

I suppose it depends on what year you have. My '55 has 15" wheels. I think '57 has 14" wheels and '56 could be either size. According to one my my books, the tire size for '55 is 6.70 x 15, which is close to 205/75R15

1956 had 7.10 x 15, not sure what the cross reference is.
1957 had 7.50 x 14 or 8.00 x 14. 205/75R14 should work.

I would double check the space and make sure the tire you pick is small enough just to be sure.

1955 used 6.70x15 which is about the same as F78-15 in the old letter system or about the same as P205/75/R15 or P215/70/R15 in the more modern usage.
1956 used the 6.70x15 or an optional 7.10x15 which is about the same as G78-15 or about the same as P215/75/R15 or P225/70/R15.
1957 used a 7.50x14 as standard which is about the same as F78-14 or about the same as P205/75/R14 or P215/70/R14. (I could not find any indication of 8.00x14 offered as options for ‘57; but if they were, then I agree G78-14 would be similar as would P215/75/R14 or P225/70/R14.)

All these conversions are an attempt to replicate the same height as well as width, so there are some trade-offs.

Yup, I agree: you should measure to be sure. 205mm is 8.1”, 215mm is 8.5” and 225mm is 8.9”. But you may already know that.
