Now that's an open ended question.
But, here's what's up.
We're leaving for the UK on Friday.
The engine will finally be in the car by Thursday at the latest.
Not complete and running, just the long block sitting in the mounts.
I haven't put any oil in it and it has just been sitting on the stand outside under the carport covered with plastic.
Here's where your suggestions come in to play.
We'll be gone for 3 weeks and I'm concerned about things rusting up inside the engine while I'm gone.
What I was thinking was to put oil in it and spin up the oil pump and turn the crank and spin the oil pump some more to get everything oiled up inside.
Should I spray some WD or Marvel or anything in the spark plug holes?
I don't know if anything like that might hinder the rings seating when I finally get to fire it up.

My shop is climate controlled (A/C), but I'll have it turned up (less cooling) while we're gone.
Suggestions?

I'd would do as you stated, especially sitting out side covered up, other wise can you shove her back inside Jeff ?
Jeff, have a good trip .

When we built our motor we used alot of assy. lube and the engine sat in a unheated garage over a winter (the wife left the garage door open during a snow storm) had to shovel the engine out, My point is you should be ok as long as it was assemblied with lube.

Motor was lubed when put together, but never installed oil or water. Sat in garage for over 20 years with no rust. Started it in Aug, 08 and runs fine. Don't see how a few weeks could make any diff at all. Lloyd PS It did have spark plugs, intake and carb on it.

Thanks guys. Here in the south the humidity will rust bare metal pretty quickly.
Once the engine is in the car, (the car is inside) the climate will be more stable.
I was mainly concerned about the being in the hot and then going into cool.
The way moisture condenses on a glass of ice water, I could just see it building up in the cylinders. And you know it don't take much for rust to start.
I opened the lifter box to put them in oil to soak and there was some surface rust already forming on them.
Assy. lube all around, but not so much in the cylinders themselves.
I just wanted to get your take on the situation.

If its going to be sitting open to ambient air for any length of time I'd use something like CLP break free gun oil in bores its formulated to stop rust and corrosion and leaves a film that stays on the metal longer than wd 40 or marvel. you can get it in a spray can and fog the cylinders and intake/exhaust ports then tape off the exhaust and intake ports and put some plugs into the spark plug holes you can also fog the valvetrain then put the valve covers on.

For real long term storage you should plastic bag the engine and put in dessicant bags after fogging all the bare metal with something like clp or another product thats specifies its for long term corrosion protection.

Agreed. Have used for several years on firearms and works really well. Lloyd
