View Full Version : Mufflers-which is quieter

Have a 57 I bought with Flowmasters on it. It is so loud my wife refuses to get in the car.
What would be a good alternative with a nice non-metallic sound. Have considered glasspacks but some stock mufflers I hear on the street sound mighty good and these "cop callers" need to go.
Thanks to the brain trust!

It seems the "tubo" mufflers tend to be reasonable at idle with a large increase in sound when you jump on it- best of both worlds?

turbo is the way to go if you do not like the flowmasters

If you have the two chamber Flowmaster "40's", I can certainly understand why you think they are too loud.. been there...done that!..
I ended up with 3 chamber Flowmaster "Delta 50's" with 2 1/2" pipes, and a crossover "H" pipe which really helps mellow out the exhaust note..
Here is a link to Flowmaster.. to tell which ones you have look very closely at the end of the muffler body. The number is scribed in the the metal. 42#### are original 2 chamber 40's (probably what you have).. The Delta 50's are 94#### series numbers. If you go to their website, click on "on line store" then on the mufflers, you can see all their current part numbers. I'm sure you will be able to figure out which ones are on your car..http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/shop/
To listen to the Delta 50's on my car, click on the links below... this will give you an idea of the sound.

I have a set of CarQuest Super turbos ( I forget what they're called) on my sbc in my 55. Hooker Super Comp headers with 5 feet of 2 1/4 inch pipe between the collector and mufflers which puts the sound just in front of the rear axel. Good deep tone but not that loud even when you nail it hard. They get alittle louder with age but still not overbearing

You probably have the two chamber and need the three chamber. The three chamber is just a low rumble. This is what I have on my Silverado.

The flowmaster 50's are great with a H pipe and rear exit. I have tubo's on my 55 with side exhaust and I think they are perfect.

Want to sneak up on people eh?
Otis has 2 sets of mufflers on his-
If you get some that compliment each other- one drop the high tinny tones and another to kill the deeper drone, you might get what you're looking for.

Measure the length, width and height. Then compare those dimensions to the various applications at their website. That should be enough info to figure out what series you have. I agree with most, 40's are too darn loud IMO. I have Flowmaster's 70 series big block II (thier quietest muffler) behind my 283. Still kinda loud, but man, they sound sweet. Tight fit too, but worth it.

I have Hooker Aero Chambers. They are a little quieter than the Flowmaster 40's. They will probably still be too loud. Maybe you could just put a straight thru turbo on right behind the Flowmasters. Kinda like the old days when some cars had a muffler and behind that in the system a resinator.

I've used the Flowmaster 50's for RV's and they are beyond too loud. I would n't use any flowmaster.

I ran some Summit Racing brand turbo's one time.. they were so quiet I took them off! Because for me... a hot rod needs to sound like one.

I'm liking my Pypes Street Performer muffles I got with my stainless exhaust from BSMExhaust (sponsor of the site). Nice little low tone at idle and smooth mean tone at WOT. I do have a X-pipe as well so it is balanced. I recommend the street performers.
