I was wondering if anyone knows of any dragstrips that have revived the gasser classes. Im not talking about bracket racing. I want to know about pounds of body weight per cubic inch heads up fastest car wins. Using the 60,s rules. I think with the current explosion of gassers being built nowadays it could be successful again. :tu Randall

I think there's some guys out there with exhibition cars but they don't run like you're thinking.
Officially the gas classes ended at the end of the 1981 season. Of course by then a "gasser" was not the sort of car you're thinking about. By then, they were mostly C1 and C2 Corvettes and late model cars of the era. 55-57s were long gone, as they were not all that competitive.

Take a look at the East Coast Gassers Web site, http://eastcoastgassers.com/.
East Coast gassers run at various tracks in the east, the group is booked in and just a single car. The compete among themselves, when they ran at New England Drag Way they ran a very professional program and their cars were top notch as far as tech is concerned. If you are building a gasser and want to race it take a look at "Rules" that members must follow.

I have seen a group called the Gezzer Gassers that raced as a group at the Good Guys race at Beech Bend dragway last year. They put on a good show and had some real nice race cars. You can check out their web site, but I think the only race pre 50s cars. One track that could still have a gasser class is George Rays dragstrip in Paragould,Ark. have heard that it still races like the old days.My hope is that with the growing popularity of the old gassers more groups will form to race them.

I live 50 miles from George Rays. They bracket race 1/8 mile go there often to spectate. Only cost $8.00 to watch or race pretty laid back not many rules. :tuRandall

I've been staying away from the local strip cause it gets in my blood. I do live close enough that I can set in my garage and listen to them run.

Randall;
We have a small out-of-the-way track not far from my house that still has a few old gassers that hit the track. Old Anglia called "Buzzin' Half Dozen" was purchased by a friend from the gentleman with NHRA that used to run the trees. Also have a 52 Chevy, a 55 Chevy and a chopped roadster decked out in old Ed Roth graphics (called "A Blast from the Past") and one shortened rail job. That's the only reason I go to the track is to watch these and pre-70' cars. My 55 hasn't hit the track yet, but it will eventually and add to the old gasser class.
Here in CO the gassers only run nostolgia events...unfortunately...and there are only about 4 events at the most during the season. I've gone to Bandimeres "test and tune " days events and there are usually a couple of gassers running, anyone can run as long as they pass tech. Theres just something about seeing an old Willys, Anglia, tri-5 or what have you, make a run like they did in the past...much better than the bracket cars and whiny imports
I am seeing a lot of gassers but most of them are either show only or just street cars (just for looks),with over/cammed motors ,not much speed equipment and very often,no roll bars. I guess some of them would do for street racing (yes it is still alive and well in the Chicago area) but most tracks would not allow them past tech.
Don't get me wrong,,I think that there is a place for all gassers. I just like the ones that are actual race cars better.-KB

Don't get me wrong,,I think that there is a place for all gassers. I just like the ones that are actual race cars better.-KBI'm building the cage in mine right now to meet NHRA specs, as I intend to get into the nines with this car, and still drive it on the street. In January when we open our track up for the 'oh-ten' season, the NHRA tech inspector will be here to inspect frames, and I intend to pass with mine. And drive it to and from the track. There is one other tri five gasser style (a very sweet looking '56) on the island, but it is pretty much a street rig and I've never seen him at our track. No roll bar. There is a very competitive Nova gasser style that runs at our track, I intend to give him some competition. He is not street legal though, trailers it to the track, I'll drive mine to the track!
Sometimes I do wish I lived over there on the mainland though, there is a lot more of this kind of activity there than there is over here.....
Aloha,

You might not have the cars and the races but BOY do you have a beautiful place to live ! I have a new Grandson so there is NO way that I am going to get Grandma to move from this fridgid midwest. It's 28 degrees today and it's not going to get better.
I've got another 4 to 5 months to put up with this garbage so I would gladly trade places with you. Glad to see that you race your car. I have a 56 that I am intending on doing the same with but don't know when I can get my current projects out of the way.
Please post your current pics. Love to see your progress. Thanks-Keith

I copied this from our tri-5 club forum.......
"In case you may not know, the Super Chevy events that are held across the country each year now have new owners, a group of track owners, promoters and investors now own the series (Tx Motorplex owner Billy Meyer included).. it was announced today that in the drag racing part of the event, a new class will be introduce that will be near and dear to our Tri Five Chevys ..
:
SCSW, Inc., purchased the Super Chevy Show series in November. The ownership group is a mix of race track owners, promoters and racing experts who want the 30th anniversary season in 2010 to be its best year yet.
Summit Motorsports Park’s Bill Bader said one of the ways to make the 2010 season shine is to bring a good, old, American classic back to the track – the 1957 Chevy. The Shoebox Shootout will feature a racing category for 1960 and older Chevy models at each of the national Super Chevy Show events. The rules and car specifics will be announced in January, but Bader wants people to pull their heavy metal out of the garage now and start preparing for the 16-car showdown at each track.
“The Shoebox Shootout is still in its infancy phase and we’re working on the rules and structure but it will certainly be a race category for 1960 and older vehicles,” Bader said. “We want those really fast, big, heavy ‘55 Chevys, ‘57 Chevys and bubbletops back out at the track. They have a tremendous amount of mainstream appeal and when you see a ‘57 Chevy blasting down the track at a high rate of speed, you won’t be able to help but watch. It’s going to be very entertaining.”
Bader said the series wanted to give a home to a stylish and quick vehicle that seems to have lost its place in racing over the years. All of the vehicles will be body-correct and look just the way they did when they rolled off the original assembly line.
The Shoebox Shootout will have qualifying and then move to a dial-in format for the single-elimination bracket of 16 to get down to the winner. Bader hopes the series will move to a heads-up format in the future when the fields are ready.
“A lot of these cars have been parked over the years because racers couldn’t compete with other makes and models,” Bader said. “These cars are in garages and barns and it’s time they start inspiring ‘wows’ at the race track again. It will take a couple of years for this class to mature but we know this is going to be a tremendous class for racers and fans alike. This is going to be a completely unique feature of the Super Chevy Show.”
this is great news for us Tri Five Chevy guys and more is to come..
the Super Chevy Show will be at the Texas Motorplex on May 22-23, 2010 - so mark your calendar!

As I currently race a '58 Chevy pickup against hondas and whatevers, I wonder if they will accept 1960 and older pickups too?
