I needed a 1 1/2 inch aluminum weld bung, with 12 straight threads per inch, for a tank I'm building. I finally found one at the Chassis Shop, so I ordered it for $9, kind of steep, but I couldn't find it anywhere else. When I hit the proceed button, no shipping came up. I get an e-mail invoice, they charged me $9.26 to ship a one ounce item, are you freakin kidding me? I sent them an e-mail saying thanks for the part, but I would not be ordering from them again. That thing could have been thrown in a bubble pack envelope and shipped for a couple bucks:motz:

Ernie.....Man that shipping is a deal breaker.....However, most places have a minimum of $10 for the first $50 and so on.....Personally, I've quit ordering nickle/dime stuff, until I have accumulated an order over $50.

Businesses have overhead, and when they have to hire someone to ship that Item, that costs them money. What is their markup on that part ? I'll bet not more than thirty percent.

I agree, but sometime you can't rack up that much of a bill at one place for specialty items. I will continue my search to find all the stuff I bought at one place.

Ernie i get that in my business all the time. I order materials and the shipping is more than what i make off the material. I try to order for more than one job ata a time but that doesn`t always work. I hate the shipping costs too.

Terry, I'm sure that's the case for a lot of things, but a 1 ounce part, I just can't see it. I know on heavy or bulky items the shipping is ridiculous. I went to buy some used plastic for my 4x4 quad on e-bay, it was in excellent shape for a fraction of the dealer cost. I checked on shipping it, actual shipping costs, not a markup, and it was going to total 50 buck more than the dealer item, so I just bought new from the dealer.

I'll bet 9 out of 10 mail order businesses would have charged you very similarly.
Just accept it and move on. You needed the part didn't you?

I have moved on, and yes, I needed the part.

Highvelocity, Don't feel so bad. I put a very hard to find trapdoor for a 60's Mtg Fstbk on Craigslist for $100, over the last weekend. It had two 6 x 9 holes cut in it for speakers. The guy wanted it so bad (very rare) he drove 200 miles roundtrip the very next morning, to make sure he was the buyer. He used over 10 gallons of gas and a bridge toll of $4. Equals over $35 in costs to get it. Plus, he spent three hours on the road, wear and tear on his Blazer, and the price of the trap door.

Guess this proves there are always two sides (or more) to every story... Later, Dave
Isn't thing similar to what Summut Racing does? Plus since they have a shop located inside Ohio they hit me up for sales tax.
So I pay for the part. Pay their $10 handling charge. Pay the sales tax added on.
Most people don't realize the shipping company even if it's the U.S. Post Office will charge a flat fee to handle the item to get it from point A to point B.
With higher gasoline prices companies like UPS have no choice but to pass this along to the customers. If not they wouldn't be in business 100 years from now like the first 100 years.
At least UPS isn't like the USPS can raising rates every other week.

One would think that the "overhead" costs involved in shipping would be part of the pricing structure. Not an add-on that is SURE to rile the customers up to a point of telling the vendor to stuff it...

UPS can pound sand too. I was going to ship a motorcycle seat since I sold it on ebay. I boxed it up very carefully and weighed it. I then went on the UPS website to their shipping calculator. They asked the weight, dimensions of the box and where it was going. It came up with $32 to ship, not too bad I thought. When I went down to ship it, the price was $56, I told them forget it. I went to the post office and they only wanted $24 to ship. I won't ship anything else via UPS if I don't have to.

I once ordered a part from Ralph Roberts Classic Chevy, I think the part was less than a buck and when I asked him the total he told me he was staying at a stamp on his desk and would take care of it. That just doesn't happen with the big guys...Unfortunately if I can live without it or move on to another project I wait until I get a full order..

I've had the very same problem.
Back about 1993 I purchased a new repo Trim Parts hood bar from a company called Ohio Valley Street Parts. They didn't have the hood bar when I was in their shop so they agreed to free shipping to my door once they got them in. I got the hood bar, found out it wouldn't fit my hood right and was told to ship it back to Trim Parts so they could look it over. I think the shipping through UPS at the was $20.
First, I'm in Ohio and second so is Trim Parts. Infact..... I could have driven to their place for $20 or less by 1993 gasoline prices.
I paid the shipping but I complained all the way out the door.

I think either having a disclaimer "minimum of $10 shipping and HANDLING per order" OR having the shipping cost come up when the item is ordered would fix problems like these. I have no problems with someone charging $10 to ship a small item as long as I know this going in. If you are only charging actual shipping, you are losing $$. Envelopes, labels, gas, time etc all have a cost.

I can't believe all this about a $10. part and $10. shipping, but I got to get my 2 cents in. Very few if any larger companies will ship anything in the mail. There is no way to track the part unless you pay a priemium and that's what the shipping companies are chargeing for. Once it leaves the company, they don't have to worry if you received it or not. The shipping company does that. If they mail it and the customer claims they didn't receive it, their out another part or else have an unhappy customer.
