I'm ready to buff out my new paint job and have been reading everything I can find on how to do this properly and what products to use. Problem is, many of the articles, books and "in-person" conversations I've had with body shop guys have differing opinions on what to use. Maybe that just means there are many ways to have it come out right, but I thought I'd ask the Tri-Five readers and experts and see what you all think. Can you give me any advice? Thanks. Eli

EVERY BODY MAN AND DETAILER HAS HIS OWN WAY. FIRST YOU HAVE TO DETERMIN HOW MANY COATS YOU HAVE TO WORK WITH . 3 OR LESS AND YOU HAVE TO BE CARE FULL. IF I AM DOING A DRIVER I APPLY 4 COATS. I THEN WET SAND WITH 2000 IF THE JOB CAME OUT PRETTY CLEAN . USUALY ON A SHELL THATS NOT A PROBLEM SOMETIMES WHEN THE CAR IS BEING PAINTED AS A UNIT AND THE GLASS AND SUCH ARE STILL IN IT . GOD KNOW'S HOW BUT DUST SEEMS TO BLOW OUT OF SOME CORNER SOMEPLACE IF THATS THE CASE WE START WITH 12 OR 1500 THEN WORK UP TO TWO THOSAND. WE THEN START BUFFING WITH 3M'S SUPER CUT PERFECT IT COMPOUD WITH A RED MEGUIRE'S FOAM CUTTING PAD. [ SOME PEOPLE PREFER WOOL] NEXT WE MOVE TO 3M'S TRESAC COMPOUND TO MINIMISE THE EFFECT OF THE SUPER CUT, NET WE GO TO A 3M WAFFLE PAD AND THIER MACHINE GLASE. AND FINALY HAND POLISH WITH A SOFT POLISHING CLOTH. IF IT IS GOING TO BE A SHOW FINISH . WE FIRST WET SAND THE CLEAR WITH 600 GRIT, REFLOW CLEAR WITH 3 MORE COATS WITH ABOUT 15% MORE REDUCER ADDED AND THEN WE START WITH 1000 GRIT WORKING UP FINALY TO 3000 GRIT FOAM SANDING DISC FROM 3M OF A FINISHING DA AND THEN START BUFFING. ON A SHOW JOB WE CAN PUT 30 TO 40 MAN HOURS INTO JUST SANDING AND BUFFING . HOPE THAT HELPS LARRY

Wow, what a process! Thanks Larry. I appreciate your advice. I'll be using your suggestions for the "driver" since that's what I've got! Eli

I've heard many people refer to the 3M products. They must be one of the favorites!

I'm a Factory Distributor in NY for Race Glaze products, and will provide fellow "Tri Five" members with a 10% discount on our products (except for our "Monthly Specials").
Our products are an alternative to the major brands mentioned. Both of our compounds are truly water soluble - very easy cleanup. They do not produce any swirl marks or stains, and are safer to work with than most compounds are (read the fine print on the labels). We also distribute the new "Cross Cut" foam buffing pads (6 different colors/types), wool buffing pads, detail pads,
micro fiber detailing cloths, Purple Metal Polish and Deoxidizer, and more.
I'm not knocking any other brands/products - just offering an alternative,
and in most cases, at better prices.
Any questions, please either e-mail me: rich@mr-shine.com
or call me: 1-800-Mr-Shine (1-800-677-4463) If you get the machine,
please do leave a msg - I'm very good about returning calls).
Thanks - Rich
