View Full Version : IS YOUR NOSE IN THE AIR OR NOT?

Several of the threads here deal with suspension... I want to drop it down in front... I am building a gasser and I want to raise the nose... I want to keep my stock height... Several of you lucky trifive owners have more than one, if so just pick your favorite... This poll is just about the front as I will do another one for the rear...

For hot-rods and gassers-Just look how they're done for the dragstrip!
I like them high with a lower front, like we did back then.Or,at least high and level.
NHRAmike57,cars like your's remind me of NASCAR and road-racing.Low and groundhugging, made for corners. It's a **** nice car too!

Well most of us have heard the old saying " opinions are like elbows every one has at least one " , so here is mine. I like the slightly forward rake look. Meaning the front lower than the back with the back close to stock or slightly lower and the front with a good rake to the stance on a hot rod tri five.

If I heard it all right from the guys that had new tri fives, and from the engineering department in Detroit (the horses mouth so to speak) they were designed to handle a wide range of road conditions and considered the majority of these cars would be on dirt or gravel roads that just might be hard to pass at times so the ride height was set with this in mind.
Well today the conditions these same cars are not needing to navigate these "hazardous" roads and so I vote for putting them at a lower ride height, to a point..... 2" is as far as I think they should go and still be drivable for most all roads.......after all the rest of the car is not exactlly Air-0-slick so gas milage is not improved by bringing it down.

Just my 2 cents. I voted lower.

I'm not really sure of the intent here.

I like lowered cars.

If you want yours somewhere else then that's ok, but what's the point of a poll? But I dang sure wouldn't change my mind based on a poll.

Do you want to see how many do each? Do you want to establish this forum as "old school" or "modern"? Why does it matter?

Is this to create jealosy or class envy?

I think it really depends on the car. A bone stocker... should be well.... stock. Generally a 4 door should be fairly stock (IMO). I really like some of the gassers I see around especially on this forum. They tend to be high and mean.. but at the end of the day, I like my car low, and nasty.

Yep me too...mine is higher in front than stock but not "gasser" high and the rear will soon be higher w/new 3 1/2 arc 5 leaf springs. It will then have a slight rake to it. I'll post some pics when it is finished.

Mine was lowered 3 3/4" in the front and the left tire would rub the inner fender on a hard left turn so I went with stock height coil springs. The front & back are stock height and I like it.
I prefer a slight lowered look in the front but not enough to spend the money to do it. :) Danny

What's not to like with almost any 567, however. I will lower my 55 but NOT SLAMMED, I'm to cheap and to lazy to go to all that work for bags etc. I'm planning to replace rear springs with a lowered set and cut a coil up front.
That should do it for me.:character0053:

This is a great time actually. Instead of all of them being done the same way, you get the whole gambut from high altitude gassers to low and mean street cruisers, stock, pro street with monster meats in the back, the modern pro touring, old time custom, and combinations of everything all at one show.

DITTO

For my '56 driver, low low in the front and just slightly higher in the rear.

Well that's for on Hy-Ways and decent streets. I have to hit the toggle switch a raise her up to get out of my long driveway.

But, I do like just about any variation of the Front or Rear height. And hoping that the workmanship is proper so the Car is safe.

Hi guys. For my own preference , I like them down in the weeds or at least stock height. A lot depends on the build style; stance is everything!
As for the way up , gasser style,... not a big fan.
To each his own, as long as it is done safely with sound engineering I,m not going to turn my nose up ( pun intended) to anyones build.

Personally I’m a high, level roller or maybe just the slightest rake "Gasser" guy. Nose up is cool but not the extreme AA/FX style.

I like the “stock” look, but with tall tires. To me nothing says tri-5 like a set of Denman straight grove ambulance tires on old style Americans.

But I have also seen some of the lowered stuff I really like, however I know too many guys who can’t attend a local cruise because they can’t clear the speed bumps entering the county park. Not only that but how do you get under them to open the exhaust.

This is a complex question, cars have personality, they are living breathing works of art and expression. The personality of the car dictates the stance, or maybe the stance helps create personality. One has to consider all aspects of the car to get the correct personality. If you do not consider the car in its entirety as you put life into it then you wind up with something like a troubled teen. It don't know what it wants to be when all grown up. When the build is not thought thru well then the car winds up with a split personality and sends mixed messages.

Think of the personality or theme for the car and then carry that message from front to back and top to bottom.

My thoughts any way, ray

Stock or a little higher. higher in back.
The only cars I felt look better lowered from stock were the old Merc's. They were so ugly stock that chopped and lowered made them look great.

But as always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and lets face it, if it's a tri five it's pretty hard to not look good!

Well most of us have heard the old saying " opinions are like elbows every one has at least one."
Man, I've been getting that quote wrong all these years!

My car is "contra" to what's popular these days. It's stock ride height all around, maybe even a little higher in front. It has a really tight turning radius thanks to stock spindles, and it rides and handles very well. I think GM knew what they were doing when they set up the steering and suspension geometry.

That said, I also like the looks of some lowered cars, as well as the classic gasser ride height.

yelton57
09-29-2012, 12:55 AM
Completely depends on the build style of the car. I like kustoms, gassers, restorations, street machines, etc. Each of them require a different stance so there's no way I could ever pick a favorite. I just dont like modern crap on old cars, its dumb and tasteless but thats just my opinion again.

When I was a teen, everything had to go up in the front, that's what was cool. Now it seems low is cool, high is old school. Kind of like the light fixtures in our house built in 1994. Everything had to be bright brass. Now that's out and it's got to be oil rubbed bronze before anyone can come over. Anyone want some really nice bright brass light fixtures? I told my wife we should just box them up for 20 years, they'll be back in style then I don't hafta buy them again. She didn't think that was funny.

For an all the time street car, I like them a bit lower in the back than stock and then a bit lower in the front than the back is. Not too low and not too much of a rake.

Now if you want to go a bit overboard and away from stock, I like the pro-street look, but it has to be done correctly with huge tires in the rear and smaller/narrower tires in the front.

Really never have been a gasser fan.
