When I bought my 56 tri-five it already had the 605 steering box conversion. The steering locks up quickly causing a very wide turning radius. I was wondering if this is due to the 605 box or do the manual steering boxes have this condition also.

Do you have disc brake conversion on the front? If so the conversion using brkt kits like CCI or Danchuk (and others) move the steering arms inboard 3/8ths on both sides. When this is done, the steering stops on the steering arms hit sooner on the stops on the lower control arms. The best work around I know is to grind 3/8ths off each steering arm at the point where it hits the stop.

Yes, I have disk brakes. I will follow up on your suggestion. Thanks for the tip.

I had a 605 box that I got from McGaughy that had transmission snap rings stuffed in each end of the housing that acted as stops to limit the box travel. I discovered this after cutting the stops off the steering arms and all the other grinding mods that you need to do to get full travel from McGaughy's dropped spindles.

The thing that really burned me was that there were two shims in one end and one in the other - so the "high spot" built into the gear mesh at what's supposed to be the center of travel was no longer in the center of travel.

I wasn't too impressed.

I have to agree, that's really stupid. Wonder who the brain child was that came up with that?
