The frame number should be on the drivers side on the top of the frame near the front door hinge. They aren't easy to see. Jim

What is there about your car that would make you suspicious that it wasn't an original convertible? Later, Dave

Also, even if you you do see it, you will not be able to confirm the fact that it was originally a convertable....That info is on the cowl tag.....See Danckuk Original Specs Sheet: http://www.trifive.com/specs/19.%20Original%20Specs.pdf

The cowl tag on a 57 can be in one of two places, three, if you want to count original A/C equipped....Either right below the heater valve or near the resistor block.....Or on the driver's side of A/C cars.

mine (cowl tag) is hard to see in picture, but its behind the distributor (on the firewall). it can also be found under the heater contol valve on some 57's. :)

Cowl tags can be reproduced to factory original?

There are two (not three) places where the cowl tags are located on a 57 Chev (US produced). The first several months they were behind the distributor and then changed (I think it was May) to under the heater valve.

On 1955-56 (not 57) factory AC cars the cowl tag was on the driver's side.

THANKS BRAD! I'd forgotten about that.

COWL TAG
This aluminum plate is riveted to the cowl. On the 1955-56 cars it is found on the top of the firewall on the passenger side, except on 1955-56 air conditioned cars. The cowl tag on A/C cars can be found on the driver’s side. The 1957 cowl tag can be found on the firewall in the engine compartment. There were two positions for the 1957 tag. For the first design, it is on the cowl toe panel; for the second design, it is located under the heater control valve.

You can buy cowl tags on eBay, buy new ones here http://www.trimtags.com and so on. That's why you hear the joke there are more FI 57 Convertibles on the road today, than were actually produced. There's really no way to confirm how a car came outfitted from the factory given the trim tag is a removable stamping.
