Gotta question
I got the stock ten bolt with 4:11 gears. I'm trying to update the car to finding parts for it easier (around here anyway). I want to regear it and my brakes need some attention and the diff is leaking...and its just plain old. Does anybody know of a rear axle I can pull from another car that will interchange exactly with the stock rear end? Or one that would need minimal modifications? In other words is there a chevelle, nova or cutlass rear end that will fit under there? I just don't have the money to get under there and order all the parts and stuff for the stock rear cause I haven't found many people that have the parts for a reasonable price. If anybody can point me in the direction of a stock GM rear that will work let me know. Or any suggestions would be nice. Thanks!

There are lots of rearends on e-bay. I have seen lots of posi units all set up and ready to bolt into your third member. Or have yours rebuilt with a new ring and pinion by a reputable speed shop in your area. Just pop the axels out, install the rebuilt unit with a new gasket into your existing housing, reinstall the axels with new seals and gaskets, refill with gear oil, install the drive shaft and your back on the road! No muss no fuss, And no welding or fabricating required! A factory original direct bolt in fit! What could be easier than that!

The only rear axles that interchange are from 55-57 Chevys. Anything else requires new spring perches as a minimum.

Oh well...it made sense in my head. Course thats the root of the problem. Thanks guys, send me a link to any ebay rear ends you see if you happen to come across any more. Thanks!

to answer your question, a 8.5 out of a 74 nova will bolt in, will have to redo spring perchs, also a 12 bolt out of a 1st gen camaro will bolt in , but $$$
for these now.

Thanks r66ss, thats just what I needed to know. a 74 Nova shouldn't be hard to come by...? I'm just disgusted with the prices of gears and stuff for the stock axle. and I haven't found a 3rd member on ebay... Welding is not an issue and neither is fabrication. I have a talented brother in law.
OK HERES ONE FOR THE AUSTRALIANS, IS THERE A HOLDEN POZI OR LIMITED DIFF HEAD THAT WOULD BOLT STRAIGHT IN TO A 57 HOUSING.
MEAN WHILE BACK IN THE USA WHAT WOULD I LOOK FOR ON EBAY . NUMBERS WISE FOR A POSI HEAD TO BOLD STRAIGHT IN, RUNNING 327 400 TURBO.

i know you wanted to update the rear housing, but the cheapest way out is to find another third member, they are interchangeable from 1955 through 1964 passenger car 55 through 62 corvette and through 64 nova though the nova casting is a little thinner.

If you have a fabricator the 8 1/2 ten bolt like this one is a pontiac ventra it replaced a 2nd gen firebird. Get a pocket kit 2nd Gen firebird /camaro diff and a set of corvette wheels to run 14 inch tread. Wheel wells need mini tubed to go that wide though.:D
