As I watched Fuzzy paint Rick's 57, it made me wonder. How many TriFivers painted their own car or payed to have it painted? This might make a good poll if it has not already been polled?

My son in law is fantastic body/paint man. He let me "help" on my 55 and let me paint (my first) my sons Corvette.

I'm in the process of painting my '55 now.
I think this would be an interesting poll. Go for it.

Since I'm a painter, I paint my own. Still think that I might go satin on the '55. I keep going back and forth. I love what Fuzzy did with Chevender's car - so shiny!

This is my first car I've painted in clear coat base coat. I painted my 46 Willys Jeep a few years ago with acrylic enamal, which was my first ever attempt at painting. Both turned out well.
The pic of my body is too big to post, but here are the rest of the puzzle I have to put together yet. This was about a $1200 paint job (Primers to clear). I couldn't see letting somebody else take me to the cleaners for something I thought could do.

If I had the know how, Id paint it myself, but I have to pay to paint it.

I painted my '56. Going for a "factory gloss" paint job. Still haven't wetsanded or buffed.

I've been working on the body of mine since November, 2011. Not full time, I'm not retired, but I can understand why these jobs at a shop are $8000 and up. Very time consuming, lots of "parts" to paint, tons of detail. I can't wait for the day when the clear is laid down. Those of you that have journeyed this path I can understand the sense of accomplishment this must bring. I just bought a used SATA gun from a local shop who is converting to waterborne, bought the base coat colors, but I can still see a month of time before I can get to the end of this piece of the project.

I have painted a few in my short time but when it comes to body work I still require plenty of hours of practise. :flag6:

Thanks, Pete! I really like it as well, and it's one you don't see too often!

Tried painting my '57 but didn't turn out good enough for me. What a waste of paint. Took it to the body shop. My friend painted my '56 wagon in the garage and turned out quite nice.

I have always maintained that you cannot beat a man at his own trade. I would imagine that of all the members of trifive, the true consensus would reveal that most do not paint them their selfs. The quality we expect just can`t be expected with out the proper equipment (paint booth) and experience. bowtie-trifive :gba:

With patience, study, the right tools and a little aptitude, a person can paint their own car. Interest is the key I think. I certainly understand the choice not to do it but I prefer the satisfaction I get from doing things myself.
I painted mine earlier this year. Body and paint has strictly been a hobby for me. I've painted less than 10 cars over the years but even the first lacquer job I did 30 years ago came out well.
The interior however went out to a pro. I'm hoping to get my car back from the interior shop next week.

Don't know how many are in the same boat, but there is no option. It's illegal to paint a vehicle in my garage. On the other hand, there must be 20 body shops within a 4 mile radius.

Mine is not painted yet, however gonna give it a shot myself.
This way i can honestly say i did the full resto myself.
I am far from a pro, done a few cars (not tri-five) so nothing to lose, everything to gain (even if just experience)
Couple pics of my other toy( A mimi moke ). Background in first pick also
shows a 74 superbug i did for my daughter.
Thes both cars were done where they sit in my driveway. Also clear ova metalic base.
