can the rear main seal be changed on a 1980 350 chevy with out removing the crank shaft, the engine is in a 55 chevy.

The answer is yes.
Thier is a special tool that you can use to replace the seal without removing the shaft.

Yep, that's the way it's done.
Hardest part of the job is getting the pan off.

Everett i have done it without that tool but is a royal pain in the rear. I used a hooked tool to get it pulled out but it took a whole lot of patience. The tool would make it a whole lot easier and safer on the crankshaft. Terry.

The last motor I did a quicky on, I replaced the crank and bearings without removing the pistons. That was nerve wrecking! I knew the engine was a fresh rebuild, but I discovered they used a damaged crank.
