steering column 55 belair sedan

What is the secret to separating the column from the steering box. I'm readty to put this beast on the roto, but find myself at a loss to get the column loose from the steering box.

The column should slide off the streeing shaft, after disconnectiong the clamp at the firewall. The shaft and steering box is one unit (original).

Gene.. I was told that the box and shaft met inside the column. Your comment makes more sense.
