Greetings All,

Does anyone have a set of plans / instructions for making body braces (doorway and cross supports) to support a convertible during a frame-off? I'm not a welder, so I would like to have a friend who's an excellent one make them for me before we meet at a show in April. Seems like there should be some basic plans that could be shimmed into place for a specific car. Or, is there a market for these used?

Thanks!

Maybe just a bit more than necessary, but it would be tough to argue too much. You'll get the idea...

Good luck!

Agreed. A would never say you could have TOO MUCH bracing:), especially if there was to be a lot of panel replacement. Fortunately, mine needs no panel work. I'm just thinking of painting the underside and powdercoating the frame. I've seen top of door bars and cross bracing to prevent flex. I'm really surprised nobody makes these, since they should be the same for all three years.

That's a nifty set up, for sure! Anyone ever use that kit? I'm sure a welder could make something for less, but he would need to have a car (or plans) to get the dimensions right. I would still like to get some plans, as it would also be nice to give my welder friend some work. That kit is certainly an option....

The book HOW TO RESTORE YOUR 57 CHEVY by Denny Williams and Harold Louisiana, shows how to make braces for a convert. Here are pics. of what I made after reading the book. It is made out of 2x2 box channel. It is attached to the upper door hinge, and at the point where the top attaches. A small brace runs down to one of the holes for the seat bracket. Hope these help.

Nick P. built a cool set of braces for my car using angle iron that just unbolts when I'm finished.

Here's a link, but I can get you more pictures if you like.
