great start, love those shoeboxes! I'm in the process of scanning a bunch of shots from the rebody.....tons of scrap metal, hehe! quarters were beat from flat sheet steel, as was everything else. No replacement panels that were any good were available back then. Old school!
This was about 1972-3. I was in highschool when I first started tearing it down. I even had hair then.:D

Here's couple of shots of how they did it in the days before quality replacement panels, all hand formed and welded, no filler used, old world craftsmen. this guy was a master welder in Portugal at 14! They never had filler over there, so my car has a little lead where the factory used it. More pics later.....

The top was custom made from a roll of burgundy vinyl top material with black underside. My upholstery shop cut and sewed it like original. It has black pads and a zip-out plastic window. The same material was used for the boot, the top well, kick panels, sunvisors and arm rest pads. I'm not aware of any custom colored "kits" currently available but I believe rolls of material are available in several non-original colors.

Sorry I'm just now answering your questions.
The wheels are Star Wires, produced by Krager in the 1980s. She has had them since 1983. I gave up tying to get her to get different wheels, she loves them. She has another set to put on the future project if I ever get it done.
She drives it often. Because I work on it, she lets me drive it too. The last time we went cruising she drove. We went for a ride in the country on a sunny Sunday afternoon

Here's a funny shot of the amount of cancer that was cut out of my car's body. Although the car is a Canadian car, oddly enough it didn't go through many winters here, but did spend a lot of time in bad storage, and, as is the curse of convertibles, a leaky top for a couple of years before I got it..........

Plans are for a 350 ramjet with 4L60E , that is if I can find out if the trans. will fit. Frame is done and the body is back on the stock frame. It has 2 1/2 inch dropped front end . Would like to go with non stock two tone paint. Haven't made up my mind on the color.

Here's the vert I just purchased. One owner California car. Setting since 1969. 596 Red but back half is painted black. Supposedly at factory since owner worked there. I'm planning to put new floors in and set on top of Art Morrison chassis built for another project (LS2/6 Speed). It will be a rat rod convertible as we are not going to paint or touch the exterior.

Fortunately I already have an Art Morrison built chassis setting under what was planned to be a 1000 point 55 convertible. That project was getting very expensive so I put it on hold. Plus I didn't want to own another car that was too nice to drive and really enjoy. We can finish buttoning up the chassis and set the beater on top and enjoy. Should be fun?!

Wow, I never knew there was that much technology available now in the detailing business. The paint thickness gauge would be great. You never know when you polish an old car, how much paint is left on it.
How much would a detailing job like that cost a normal civilian like myself?:tu

Here are a few pictures of one I bought in late '08. The previous owner hit a goal post on a football field in '66. He removed the damaged quarter, installed a tail light, and drove it for about a year, then parked it in this pasture in northern South Dakota. It is close to being ready for paint.

It was good meeting you the other day when you stopped by our shop here in Texas. Hopefully you'll be driving the 55 next year to the Roundup.
Here's a 56 Convertible with a HRJ version of the Nerd Rods Frame with C4 corvette suspension. This one also has a de stroked 400 SBC from AJ Foyt's backup NACAR motors.
Yea, it was great to meet you guys and I appreciate the insight. As a result I have decided just to put in the LS2 w a 4L65e and 9" (borrowed from another project) in the stock frame. We'll work to stiffen the frame (w minor, reversible modifications as to not tweak so the doors don't close properly. I know that if we take the body off the frame I just won't stop on the restoration and I don't want to touch the outside paint on the car.
Have a buddy working on a 57 Hardtop and I told him he needs to check out your frame!
Here's the project thread on the 55 after it was delivered.

Awesome hotrod! Man is that red top ever striking. I'd like to hear how it handles and rides with all C4 underpinnings. What displacement is the 400 now? Thanks for the pics, all great shots.....right klik, save! :)

Whoa! those are some beautiful converts you guys are post'n.... thanks for sharing everyone... man, I had a friend convert his HT into a HT convertible years ago and came real close to following his lead and doin' it. I had reservation cause everyone told me it devalue it, but you know what... I NEVER intend on selling it, it will go to my son when I'm gone, so I don't know why I just don't do it... ya'll have any thoughts on that, or any of you ever converted your HT into a Roadster, but did it where you could put the HT back on if you wanted... that's what I've considered in the past... I'd only do it if I were able to take the top off and put it back on when I wanted to... :tu BDR...

Sorry I have no idea what the CID is of the car. We build and delivered the chassis, Chuck built car. When it was finished we did the chassis tuning and swapped a differentials in the car (I sold him a whinny one so this was free) But I was aloud to use if for several shows, it drives amazingly BTW, and so I also did the photo shoot for him to thank him for letting me use it for the shows we did.

If you engineer a removable top, which would be really cool, the frame will have to be stiffened.
Without the steel top, the frame and body will flex. That's why convertibles have the added X-member, and two extra body mounts.

Purchased new by my father. Frame-off restored by members the family, literally over a 30 year time period. Back on the road in original color in May 2007 with a '57 283, along with the original Powerglide and Chevy rear axle. Presently undergoing a powertrain upgrade. Getting 327, TH-200-4R, Explorer 8.8 rear. The vintage powertrain will be stored in case, in the future, it is needed.
This car spent '57 thru '60 near Madrid Spain at Torrejon AFB. Dad was career military, hence the reproduction foreign plate on the front bumper. We've always referred to her in a feminine sense, mostly because of the color. When I was 16 these cars were immensely popular, but I never asked to drive her, other than as a student driver, even though I'm sure Dad would have let me. Back then I refused to be caught dead in a pink car. Nowadays, I'm not so inhibited.
I appear in both pics as the shortest person. When the black-and-white was taken I was 4 years old. Do the math.
