I'm in the need of a good pair of tailgate hinges for a wagon. Anyone have a pair they'd part with for $$ or trade for other parts? I have a lot of extra 55-56 parts.
Alternatively :D, If there's one thing I would do to modify the exterior of my Nomad, it's to shave the tailgate hinges. Has anyone been able to do this in a clean way, so the tailgate looks good open as well as closed? I think they're kind of an eyesore on the back of the car and love the smooth look when they're gone, but the only hidden hinge project I've seen looked pretty bad inside the car, IMO. I've seen several Nomads with these shaved, but haven't had the chance to look inside them.
I'm sure you've seen this one?

Looks to need a bit of finish work.

Yeah, that's the look I'm trying to stay away from if I can ...but I don't know any other way to do it other than some side hinges. The tailgate won't be down all that much, I think, but I want something that doesn't look "hacked".

Try to find a picture of a '58 Chevy wagon tailgate hinge installed. I may be able to dig up the hinges I have and take a pic, but I don't think they'll be much help without them installed. I have a pic, but by the time I scan it in, you won't be able to make out the detail enough to do any good. It is basically a strap hinge (picture the Nomad hinge flattened out) that bolts to the subfloor of the '58 and straight out to the tailgate when it is opened. There is a recess that the gate drops into when opened, so there is a pocketlike area under the floor lip and above the rear panel/jamb. It looks like the weatherstrip seals to the lip running across the back (the hinge actually slides through a hole in the pocket under the lip so the the lip stays flat. I hope you can picture it or someone can come up with a pic.
Found one. Sorry it's a lowrider, but it's pretty clear.
