View Full Version : Disc Brakes on 57

I have been a member/subscriber to the "Late Great Chevy" for a number of
years before they were bought out by Ecklers. I just received their new mag
with the cover car (flaming 57) and the title of the article was "junkyard
technology" or something like that. What caught my eye was that he used
disc brakes on the front from a S-10. He also used the rear end and master
cylinder on his car. Has anyone out there used disc brake set-up from a later
model GM that will bolt on? I would rather shop at the local salvage yard than
order a bolt on kit.

I used parts from a Monte Carlo including the late model bearing setup on my 57 many years ago and have had no problems, I have a tech article which explains the whole project but I don't know if I can add a PDF file to this posting, I'll try. I also modified my stock master cylinder eliminating the need for the infamous perportioning valve which means you don't have to change any brake lines except the rubber hoses at the wheels, making this conversion very affordable. when you pull your master cylinder apart you should find a cup shaped check valve with a thin rubber disk inside, remove this rubber disk and reassemble the cylinder, that's it, total cost $0.00. It doesn't look like the PDF is attaching, if not you can contact me at 1bobis@comcast.net and I'll send it direct.

Hi Guys,

Nice cars... I also would like to know about the brake set-up as well. It just happens that I have a Restored 72 Monte and have some parts left over. Maybe I can do the brakes at a true $ 0.00 cost as I may have everthing already and don`t know it . Thanks in advance. Here`s my email if you would be so kind as to shoot me over the info.

Thanks,

I have a tech manual that will call out just what years and models front disc will inter change from. Easiest way for me if anyone is interested would be via fax. Drop me an email and then follow up here to let me know incase my spam catcher gets it first.

I too would be interested in the info as I have a monte and a cutlass available to get the brakes from. The article linked in the previous post talks about dropped spindles. I would love it if I could use the spindles and all from either car. I would also like to know the advantage of the master cylinder modification.

Here's a short rundown of the parts involved in putting discs on the stock spindles.

Rotors/wheel bearings from a 69 Camaro, 69-72 Chevelle, 70-72 Monte, or 69-74 Nova.

A set of aftermarket or home fabricated caliper brackets.

Calipers - some of the brackets take calipers from one of the above cars, also the cars in the link - other brackets use a caliper from 79-84 Malibu/Monte and their GM cousins. S-10 calipers are similar and can work.

There are NO other disc brake spindles that will bolt to a 55-57 front end.

The dropped spindles often use different components. Some of the most popular ones use a rotor and caliper from the 79-84 Malibu/Monte/etc.

Hope this helps clear some confusion. There were some errors in the link.
