Hello All-
I am just finishing up the front suspension on the '57 BA. The assembly manual states that the mark on the upper steering shaft should face up with the wheels are straight. Unfortunately, with the CPP I am not able to keep the flat part of the shaft up when the wheels are straight despite the complete adjustments of the tie rods. Any suggestions?? Is is necessary to keep the flat part up on the steering shaft for a 605 type box.
Thanks,
Dwain

I'm not the best person to ask about this but I'd turn it all the way one way then turn it the other and count the turns and then turn it back half as many turns and see where your at example if its 3 turns lock to lock turn it back 1.5 turns.

12pack,
Thanks for the response. I will check out your method.

The flat on my CPP is up when using the above method.
It really doesn't matter what box you're using. Get the box centered. Then line up the steering column and wheel to it. Then adjust your tie rods so that the car goes straight with the wheel up and the box centered. (This assumes that the rest of the wheel alignment is in the ball park.
If you can't adjust the tie rods to do this, something is wrong with their range of adjustment. This can happen with disc brake conversions or some dropped spindles. On most cars you'll just need to clean out the tie rod adjuster sleeves with a tap, or tap them slightly deeper. Be sure you don't have a LH inner tie rod for an original power steering setup. It's a couple of inches longer. Both inner tie rods should be the same length.

Rick-
Thanks for the response. I was able to get on the line with CPP and they stated that I was the first to ask the question and it doesn't matter where the flat location is. Anyway, I was able to get it more centered than before so I will put the steering column on a see what happens.

As I recall, the flat on my CPP box was not at 12 o'clock when the box was on center. However, I did not need to adjust the tie rods from where they had been with a 605 box.

Thanks Mike. I installed the steering column and things seem to line up fine. The only exception is the long set screw on the rag joint which inhibits the complete steering since it hits the firewall. Installing a shorter set screw should do the trick.
