I am replacing the 605 steering box with a CPP 500 and have a clearnace issue with the frame. The instructions mention that some frames need to be clearanced and of course that is my case. The interference is where a weld attaches the crossmember and front frame. The car is done but I have the motor and transmission out at this time. I feel that if was heated and dimpled it could work but there are brake lines in the area. The other option cosidered was to grind away the area but worried this will comprmise the welded frame area. What have the rest of you done to overcome the clearrance issue?
Leo....Do you have a one-piece or two-piece frame? On my two-piece frame a good ding with the sledge hammer did it.....However, on my one-piece frame, I had to grind the weld down for clearance....Below is a photo of the one-piece frame with the CPP500 box installed.
Most every install of a CPP 500 box on a 1 piece frame has this issue, Nothing a little heat and a hammer or a bit of grinding can't cure. I just went through it yesterday on a 55 with a 1 piece frame. I have never had a clearance issue with the 2 piece frames.
Thanks POPS and everyone else for the feedback. Ground a bunch of steel out and it fits. Now it's time to finish installing the 383 stroker with 200-4R and get this '55 back on the road.
I didn't have to shim mine. Lined up good. Replaced a 605 box that the previous owner had installed and he reworked the column.
