Standard heater is a recirculating heater only with no fresh air provision. Deluxe heater has fresh air inlet from right kick panel. The fan blows the air through the core while with the deluxe the fresh air can be used to put heat without the fan. I converted my 55 over to the deluxe with a few pieces from the 56 that I have.

I think the defroster lever is mounted on the heater outlet down on the firewall.

that is correct on the cheaper heater it has a lever by the heater outlet that operates the door inside, one way is defrost the other is floor heat. All the switch does is control the fan motor

The thumbnail posted has the right kick panel vent shown and to the right is where the connector goes to the fan inlet box. Above that in the pic is where the blower mounts to the fire wall. for the deluxe heater. the standard has a blocking plate over the hole in the kick panel, has the manual defrost lever as mentioned and a screen over the blower air intake.
