Thank goodness the guy at the parts store is not the guru he thinks he is. I had a thermostat sticking, it would bounce up to 240 then back down, and he was positive it wasn't the new thermostat. It was , I replaced it and took it for a ride it it operated perfect. I was thinking engine rebuild, where to take it for machine work, how was I going to get this one past the wife, that kinda stuff and as it turns out it was just a $6.00 thermostat.
This car is new to me, the '56 Belair 2dHT, and so far it has been suprisingly solid and fixable. |

Just for future reference, i have been told and have had experience with the parts store thermostats. Now i generally try to buy them from the GM dealership only and have had better luck with them.

Lots of inferior parts out there. So far Ive had good luck buying from NAPA. Your right about counter people, not many know what their talking about.

Ahhhh....don't listen to any of those guys.... Isn't that the reason everyone comes here to get the right answer.... the forum should be the first place to go!!!!!
There are so many mis-informed people out there! I went to the fuel station the other day to fill my motorcycle, one of the places I go to almost weekly. I am having trouble with the premium pump, no fuel coming out. So, I go into the station and the girl tells me its not working. So....I need fuel...decided to use the mid-grade, she tells me that that pump is slow because it mixes regular and premium together from the same pump...... This is where I started to think, (I worked at a Mobil back in the 70's), we had a seperate tank for each type of fuel...no mixing going on. Does anyone know if that is the way they do things today???? Mixing fuel instead of seperate pumps for seperate fuels? What is the ratio to get the proper octane rating? Pete Pete

Thats what I have been told, is that the mid grade is a mix of the two. I have no idea what the ratio is. That's why Costco has cheaper gas, they don't have the extra pumps, just regular or supreme.

Well............... I always knew it to be mixed before it arrived to the fuel station...not at the station. Isn't that the reason why there are different tanks in the ground?
Could you imagine....the stations mixing the fuel??? We would never know if the octane ratings were true???? Its bad enough they are cheating the flow rates!!!!! I worked for a Shell dealer in the 70's and he used to pump water in the tanks to bring the level up when he was waiting for his delivery. Unfortunately for us.......the mechanics....we had to drop about 10 fuel tanks that had water in them. Some of the cars never left the pump, before the water reached the carb or injectors!!! I went to another Shell station in the 80's that also had water in their tanks. Needless to say, I do not buy fuel from Shell, unless absolutely necessary! My 2 cents...... Pete
