I was told this was good way to go... switch from my broken down 4gc Rochester to a new Edellbock 1406 600cfm for my stock 283 with electric choke. Not to much to do maybe a new flange, gas line, and throttle linkage. I can get a new one for $299.00 here in Canada
Any thoughts would be appreciated... Thanks Peter |

Pretty straightforward. It is electric choke though so you will have to run a wire. I have one, but haven't fired up the motor yet.

i didnt think that carb would fit on a 4gc intake without an adapter.

As I've said in other posts, that 600cfm Edelbrock is a great carb, I had one on my 283. Personally, I think a 500 cfm would be much better suited to a stock 283. But if you can score a good deal on a 600, go for it! Don't rule out factory rebuilt carbs from Edelbrock, they can save you a bunch of money. Tim

Thank Tim Yes their is an adapter flange for the conversion... There has been debate about the 600cfm compared to the 500cfm the 600cfm maybe over kill but as long as it works well plus it cheaper then the 500cfm...Peter

Whats broken on the original carb ? , if you intend on keeping your car stock I think it would be better to repair the original. If your going to switch out the manifold definatly stay with a dual plane on a stock 283. A single plane combined with a carb that is too large will most likely give you drivability problems.
As I see it you have 5 reasonable options Repair the original carb. Edelebrock carb with adapter on original manifold. Stock "look" as mentioned earlier get a manifold off a 327 that had a carter afb to use with the edlebrock carb ( note you will need a carb baseplate gasket set thats specific to this manifold as there is a channel in the mating surface that is connected to the exhaust crossover passages , the gasket was stacked a had a thin stainless gasket that covers this channel that its purpose was for carb heating , at least on the one I have sitting in the garage that came off a 275hp 1966 vintage 327 ) Aftermarket manifold Edelbrock performer eps 2703 or similar to use with the eldebrock carb. Convert to a custom electronic fuel injection setup ( then you can put the nifty fuel injection badge/flags on the fenders and not feel too fake about it) ![]() Regards, Robert Last edited by Typhoontx; 09-29-2008 at 09:56 AM.. |

I am running a 1406 on a 350ci and it works very well, but I think you are over the top a little with this carb on a 283. Mine is on the stock manifold. Anyone use an Eldebrock torker II manifold? I was given one, and can't decide to switch the stock one out or not.

I'm running a TorquerII with a 1405 on my 283. Just put it together last weekend. Tested it out last night on a 90 mile round trip on 4.7 gallons of 93 octane which comes out to 19.1 mpg. This was not light footing it on the ride. Just have to make the glasspacks talk when shifting through the 4 gears.

I've heard that there was never anything wrong with the 4GCs, they just aren't as popular as the Carter WCFBs, maybe 'cause they weren't used in dual quad applications . Should run great after its set up right. Good luck! Tim
