Hello guys and gals,
Ok im so new to this im a virgin, I bought a 57 4 door and now just getting a world of knowledge from this website. Now I want to ask.... What would it take to convert the whole car to 12V? What do I need and items to purchase? Since the car didnt come with a motor Tranny or even a wiring harness Udner the hood, Im actually going thru this like a blind bat. Since you guys are like My Guru on this long travel ahead. Im all ears in getting all the informations other sites that carries what i will need and materials that most of you already used to make it as painless as possible. Thanks Mike A.K.A Virgin 57 |

It won't take anything. All tri-5's have a 12 volt system. Are you going to try to keep the car original? A 3 wire later model alternator is a good upgrade to the electrical system if your not going to stay all original.

Hmmm that makes it alot easier. Cause there was a guy that complained that when his dad tried to install a regular radio on his inline 6 57 seadn they kinda fried the entire wiring harness under the dash. When i heard that it just scared the living crap out of me. Along with the attached pics are pics under the hood. so as you can see theres nothing there... So meaning to say I have to start from scratch.... I need a motor, tranny, support, driveshaft, wirings etc....

Like Don said, All trifives are 12 volt. 54 was the last 6 volt for Chevy. If your buddy fried the harness he either had something backwards or a bad harness. These old cars have had so many fingers in them over the years it's hard to tell what's what sometimes. Looks like you got a nice more door there to start with. I highly recomend a new harness. A nice car on fire is just not a pretty sight.

American Auto Wire http://www.americanautowire.com/index.html makes one of the easiest wiring harness systems to install. It appears to be expensive at first glance, compared to some of the other harnesses, but it has a lot of parts included that the other systems don't have. It requires very little spliceing, where some of the other systems have a fuse box and a bunch of wires that have to be spliced to your old sockets, plugs, and switches.

Also, the purchase of a shop manual, and an assy manual has made my day ALOT easier!
