I just bought a rear that was supposed to be out of a 55 Nomad. It is a complete rear-drum to drum. When I got the front section pulled out I noticed that the pin in the carrier has been pounded out of it's original position and now sits about 1/2 out of the original hole. In other words the hole on both sides of the carrier is elongated or egg-shaped by 1/2 inch. The spider gears on the pin and the ring and pinion are in great shape, but the carrier is smoked ! I have never seen this before and wonder if anyone had a clue what would do this, unless it was just a bad casting, something had to cause a lot of force on the pin to drive it back into the carrier on both sides like that ! Thanks guys-Keith

Is the pin in 1 piece??
If not, it was run in a broken condition, and ate the holes out. If it's in 1 pc, it was likely run loose.

Thanks for the response guys. I'll try to get pictures. Actually I didn't get hurt too bad because I bought it for parts and as I said ,it's complete and was $50.
I figure that the ring and pinion is worth that. Not to mention the housing ,backing plates, axles, complete brakes, brake drums, even good emergency brake cables. I new that the carrier was hurt when I bought it. I was just wondering what caused it. The rest of the rear end looks flawless . I've been so busy working on other stuff that I plopped the parts down in the shop and never looked any farther. Thanks guys-Keith |
