Reverse Rims

I've heard back in the 50's they had chrome reverse rims. Were they aftermarket or did the they make them there selves? Why do they call em reverse rims?

I had a old boss that had said he was the first one in town with reverse wheels.
I they were made by removing then replacing the center section of the wheel, turn the wheel around and reweld the center. So the off set went forward not backward over the hub. Making the wheel a Deep Dish per say.

I think back in the early days, they were modified stock rims as roughneck described, but as time passed, they 'd weld a stock center section to a special rim, I know the rims came in several different sizes/offsets up through the '80s. I love 'em, going to put a set on mine. They're all over American Graffiti

Stockton Wheel also sells chrome reverse rims, but they're pricier, and I've read a lot of negatives about that company on the H.A.M.B.

Just don't get the ones with the excessive mounting holes. Takes something, make that more than someting away from the original look!

Here is a shot of my old '56 Chevy with chrome reverse & stock '56 Chevy hubcaps. These wheels had three hubcap nubs were made by Superior. Pic was taken around 1978.

Something to think about if you make reversed rims yourself, your valve stem will be on the inside unless of course you fill the hole and make a new hole on the opposite side. The valve stem on the inside can be another custom touch as it leaves the outside rim "clean" but what a pain to air up the tires. It is probably a lot less aggravation just to buy new wheels from someplace like "Stockton Wheel" especially when you consider chroming and all. You can still get the wheels with only five lug holes and the three nubs.

Considering what stock 55 wheels are worth, I wouldn't do that to them.

How hard are they to make? What kind of wheels do I need, stock 57 wheels? I think I can get em from Danchuk!
