Fellows, I have a 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max pick up truck with a 2.0 liter engine straight drive. Current engine has 170,000 miles. (Second engine.. first one died at 100,000)
About a month or so past it suddenly started backfiring and the engine would die. I thought I was not going to get it back to the house but I did. Things went fine after that so I thought perhaps I had some water in the tank. Well the problem has returned. I drained some gas from the tank, no water. I replaced the distributor cap, rotor button, spark plug wires, and fuel filter. The engine cranks fine, runs fine until about 45 or 50 mph and even might do so for awhile and then suddenly the engine starts to die and backfire. Well...I got it back home again. I checked the catalytic converter ... Ok .. can see daylight thru it. I even drove the vehicle with no exhaust system. Still have the problem. I have used my vacuum pump to check the EGR, the vacuum advance on the distributor and any thing else I could check. Found only a few poor vacuum lines. Fixed those. The truck has a new timing belt. My buddy told me to spark the economy and buy a new truck but I told him they come with payments, taxes, insurance, interest, Etc. So does anyone think perhaps the distributor or possibly the fuel pump could be the problem. I have not done a pressure test on the fuel pump. I can see fuel in the clear filter but am not real certain about the flow volume? Heres hoping someone has had this problem and can offer some input? My Thanks, CWayne |

It could also be something as simple as the fuel cap vent not working properly.

CWanye,
Probably not the problem but on my mini-van every once in a while a piece of carbon would break loose and lodge the EGR valve open. I would have to take it off and remove the carbon then it would run great again. This same van had a problem with the Ignition module and intermittingly would miss and some times just flat stall and wouldn't restart then after cooling down it would work again for months. Just some ideas, Hope you figure it out.

Heres a long shot, but check your GROUNDS ! that strap from the block to the frame, check the computer grounds at the harness grounds . some time they go bad and man do all kindza crazy stuff . give it a shot what have you got to lose ? you put an engine in before, you must have an idea of where they are !
try it !!! regards Dave

Sounds fuel related to me. Could be the fuel pump as you stated or something as simple as your gas cap not being tight, vented or shot. ???

I thank all you for the input!! I am going to do a fuel pump flow and pressure test. I am not certain what ethanol does to some parts but my truck is 20 years old and I have read ethanol can ruin certain fuel pumps, some seals, float in the gas tank??
I now refrain from buying ethanol (does nothing for gas milage) and I really do not want it in my 57. Shell is thus far the only station I have found ethanol free. CWayne |

Fellows, I pulled the fuel line loose at the output of the fuel pump and very little fuel was flowing while turning the engine. Hooked up my fuel pressure gauge and less than one pound of pressure. Got a new pump and some new fuel hose. Got dark before I could complete everything so tomorrow I will find out. CWayne
