I want to put some form of power steering in my 56 townsman wagon but im on a very tight budget.. i was considering a 605 but today at a swap meet a fellow had a complete power assist set up from a 63 impala .. i think with some thoght and fabrication which i can do , i think i can make this work and still retain the stock column and box .. i realize that a 605 would be better and probably a 500 would be best. i can pick this up for 100 .. open to your thoughts.......Fred

Fred the power assist is pretty much what the original tri five power steering was in the beginning.

Fred...I believe the ram cyl and cont valve may be the same....However, then you will still need a drag link, pitman arm, idler arm, pump and hoses.

No, the 58-64 linkage, ram, and valve are all completely different, NONE of the power steering stuff is the same. You cannot directly bolt them in, nor could you even EASILY modify things to fit 55-57.

In 1982 I had a friend install a used power assist in my '62 Impalla SS. The cylinder leaked. Then you could still get a rebuild kit. It still leaked a little after the re-build but it still made the steering "much" easier.
