I'm just hoping the available pitman arms are affordable and not as much as the box itself.

Another thing that bothers me is a new pitman arm is absolutely necessary for this application, so why doesn't he offer it?

I read a lot of his feed back, so I'm sure he's OK. Oh well if it isn't a good deal, it's just a learning/teaching thing for another Trifiver.

I just got an Email on buying the pit-man arm, it's ninety five bucks, which is a little high as pit-man arms go, but then it may have a very narrow application.
In that Email it said that is box can be used with stock, auto columns and manual shift one's. I did PM that 55' Nomad owner, who was looking to put PS on his manual trans car last week.

You can't use these boxes, or any other PS box with the 3 spd columns, there's no room for the linkage mechanism. You barely have enough room to get a rag joint in between the columm and box. The columm tube just sticks out of the firewall, maybe 1/2", no way to have the bulky linkage there in that small of a space. |

Just find out the application and buy it at the wrecking yard for $20, like he does. |

CORRECT!!!!! On the PS box even with auto, there is not enough room to mount the orig column bracket where the orig went under the hood. You have to use an inside bracket to anchor the column which is a real PITA and mine looks awful. See NO WAY the box could be used on a standard shift on the column. Lloyd

That's the key -- knowing the proper part for the application. I'm staying tuned because I'd really like to know what it is.

I think BBT's comments are pretty much on the money.
I also think that $95 for the pitman arm is money well spent if it works right, clears everything, and is structurally sound. The stock pitman arms have 3D curves in them, so they will clear everything in the stock equipment environment. With stock, 605, or CPP500 boxes, there is a preferred stock manual pitman arm to use for header clearance. I have to wonder what this pitman arm looks like and whether it will clear in a typical installation. I don't think there is a Jeep pitman arm that's going to work without mods - modern cars simply don't use the ball and socket connection that manual steer 55-57s used. So I just don't think you are going to find the silver bullet in a salvage yard for $20 and just bolt it on. The other thing I wonder about with an "adapter plate" is whether that plate will move the box too far inboard to line up with the column. The other thing about that is that it's going to intrude on the exhaust if it's too thick. If you look at a stock box or a fabbed 605 or 670 box, there's precious little room for a welded or cast in plate. Simply no room to stack an adapter and mounting bolts. I guess you're committed to be our pioneer here, so please post some photos when you get the hardware. |
