What does F8I4E stamped on the front passenger side block pad mean? Should there be other numbers along with this code?

Does this help? http://www.mortec.com/locatpg2.htm
I think you have to have the year range from the casting # to know the meaning of the suffex letter.

It looks like this 283 is the original engine in the 57 210 4-door then. The car has a 283 2bbl, and 3-speed manual. I could have sworn the 1 was an I though....I looked at it really close. I saw no serial number at all, but I didn't attempt to scrape the paint off.
So it sounds like "numbers matching" doesn't mean much on a 55-57 since there is no VIN on the engine. I guess as long as date codes are consistent that's enough? Sorry I asked this again in a separate thread...I wasn't getting an answer on the other one because it was buried. Thanks BBT!! |

From the looks of that car I would say it is 100% orig. Absolutely no reason to think otherwise. Too bad it's not an orig 1957 Vet!

I was researching my 57 wagon and found a site that said that chevrolet quit putting a serial number on the engine in 57. 56's had em. My 57 6 cyl engine is F729B (no serial numbers) which is a flint engine for an automatic. Maybe that only applies to 6 cylinders
