Hi, to all
Please can any of you tell me how to work out the ratio on my 57 chevy,
it is a 210 4dr sedan which had a straight six in it but i found it was revving high at low speed it also has a stock 3 speed manual and i am currently fitting a 283 V8 with the stock gearbox
Your car probably had a 370 rear end in it from the factory. You can count the ring teeth and divide by the pinion teeth for the ratio. 37 ring teeth divided by 10 pinion = 3.70 ratio. etc. so long as the trans is not an overdrive the final gear is 1:1 so it really deosn;t matter what kind of trans you have.
How come everything I do is now considered "Old School?"
55-56 had 3.70 with a standard trans, 4.11 with the OD trans, and 3.55 with the auto trans. In 57 they went to 14 inch tires and then they used a 3.55 with a standard trans and 3.36 with the auto trans.
Life is like a roll of toilet paper.....the closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.
Rears in these cars got changed alot over the years so it's hard to tell sometimes. Jack the car up so both rear wheels are off the ground. Turn one wheel and see if the other wheel turns the same direction. If so you have a posi rear. If not it's an open rear. For a posi leave both wheels off the ground and turn the wheel 1 revolution and count how many times the driveshaft turns. 3 and a half turns of the shaft to 1 turn of the wheel would be a 3:50 rear. A little over 4 turns of the shaft would be a 4:11 rear. Get it? On an open end rear just have one wheel off the ground and count the turns of the drive shaft. Take the number of turns and divide by 2 (or is it multiply? been a while and i'm rusty on open ends) I know it's a crude method but it will get you in the ball park. The only other way to tell is to take it apart and count the teeth. Good luck!
Ain't nothin to it, a baby can do it!
