I just put a van column in my 57. Column or floor shift? For column shift, I cut a section out of the shift tube and outer column and welded them back together. I'm using a 700R4, so I changed the selector detent plate, cut the neutral safety switch notch bigger, and fastened a tab on the shift tube to operate the shift indicator. Floor shift would be easier.

What is the length on a van column? What years do I look for? I think the truck column I have for my 57 truck is too long. Was thinking about the van column.

And where do I measure from

Sorry, I don't know how long the van column was before I cut it down. I think I may have cut a 3" or 4" section out of the van column to fit my 57. I didn't cut it to a certain measurement, I cut it to fit as close to the 57 instrument cluster as I could get it.

If you can't read this, look at Eckler's web sight for a better read.

RW....The answers are in the article that I posted.....Column is out of 1972- 1978 Chevy or GMC van....The length that you need to cut it down to is in there as well.

I'll look at the other article that one was very hard to read(blurry) I'm putting it in my truck. Maybe I can just cut down the one I have, after I read further.

Thanks guys,

Default Stock column

I have a 500 box & want to use the stock column without the shifter, the question is, shorten the column & tube 3" +or-, then drill the three holes for the lower hardware or do you need to section like you would for the shifter too?
Thanks, Chris
